I've removed the exhaust cam on a Viper while I locked the intake cam sprocket to the exhaust sprocket with an old hinge. I was able to swing the exhaust sprocket out farm enough that I could remove the exhaust cam so that the tensioner did not extend.
If you don't care about top speed you can certainly add weight to bring down your cruising RPM's at the cost of top speed.
This is why tunes on Sidewinders often improve MPG. The more top power a machine has, the heavier weight it can handle which will also lower cruising RPM's.
Arctic Cat has a parallel 700 twin in the Wildcat 700.
I think they are capable of building an engine like this with one more cylinder to mimic the triple. Note that engine has no stub shaft.
The stroke may be too long at 75mm, but that can be changed. The point is that I think they could do it...
Depends which way it has moved, One way will cause possible kickback and the other way can cause it to be lazy and harder to start.
It's not that hard to check, just need a clutch puller and then remove four bolts and slide it out.
Mark where they are on the shaft.
Take them all off and turn them around.
Note that the arrows have to line up.
When pressing on and off you must press on the hub close to the shaft.
