Off trail riding in UP of MI

The forest roads in the hilly country around Munising, and Marquette, also west of Big Bay, and in the Keweenaw are great places to ride and obtain access to great federal and state land open to snowmobiling. There are even opportunities for extreme riding. Conditions are great right now, like...

    Are white slides a myth?

It has been long accepted that white slides wear better then colored slides due to the info in Mooseman's post. One thing to note about many Yamaha skids though is that most of them will wear slides to a point quickly and then seem to go a long time with minimal wear. Unless they are going...

    Behind Secondary

Besides the bearing and the circlip you should have the large nut and tapered collar (threaded into large nut) that tightens the jackshaft to the inner race of the bearing (after chaincase is completely assembled). Then on the shaft you should have stepped washer, and then a flat washer before...

    Riding in Michigan

Please be aware that Houghton (the town) and Houghton Lake (a lake) are a very long way apart. I believe the restaurant they are speaking of is in the town of Houghton which is in the Keweenaw Peninsula of the Western Upper Peninsula. You mentioned Houghton Lake which is in the middle of the...

    Behind Secondary

Some secondaries like to shed that bushing for some reason. There are 2 bushings in the secondary, one in the helix, and that one you see there that belongs in the movable sheave. I would replace with a new bushing and then peen the sheave slightly to help hold the bushing in place. I have...

    Reverse to get unstuck

IMO . . . If you can reverse, you are not stuck yet. As soon as it starts to struggle you can usually turn out if there is room. Sometimes there is no room, or I react too late and the best option is to dig it in a little so it doesn't go freewheeling down the hill backwards which usually...

Best way to patch heat exchanger

Find a guy who specializes in aluminum radiator welding. It shouldn't cost much. He will likely want it removed from the sled which can be a pain, but ask first.

    Should I trade 05 500ss REV for 07 Phazer?

They are different sleds for sure. That SS (it is an SS, right?) has the solid non-HO 600 motor in it and is one of Skidoos sleeper sleds. Very quick and light. Somewhat of a secret, but that sled will keep up with the big boys up to 60-70. Plus it does not have the engine issues that plagued...

Found an Apex in the Pickers

Hope you reported it. Left like that I am guessing either a stolen sled, or someone needing to sleep it off before coming back to get it.

    Turning in deep snow

Yes, a little countersteering (like on a bike) along with transferring your weight to the inside, makes it very easy to roll up on it's side, and once you have it tipped over the throttle finishes the turn. Use the skis and throttle to control the balance. Practice this as much as you can in...

    Brake locked up on trail

I tow like they do in the mountains - up close and personal. Tie both ski loops to the back corners of the rear bumper as tight as you can (don't toe the skis in). You will be amazed how well the sled tracks up and down hills. Make sure the front bumper of the towed sled doesn't line up close...

    Brake locked up on trail

Check your chain and drive axle. They do make a Buddy Tow which is simply a piece of plastic with hooks to attach it to the track and a couple guides to keep the sled straight. They work really well and roll up fairly small.
