My Phazer MTX Turbo Project Log

Is the black plastic OE for that year? I want to change the plastic from silver to black. I asked at the parts counter about the correct part number for the black plastic. I got the blank look and "I don't have any way to figure it out".

    Possible GEMS issue

Well it is looking like a blown head gasket. Could be a burnt valve also. I will not know until I pill the head.

    Possible weak spark.

I don't have the $269 Yamaha special tool for testing spark gap. I am using a test light. I clamped the ground lead to the chassis. On cylinder 1 the spark jumps out of the coil pack a little, cylinder 2 I have to place the probe inside to get it to jump. I have tested the crank sensor and it...

The fuel pressure is spot on. I replaced the coil pack that seemed a little weak. No joy.

    Possible GEMS issue

NO joy! Fresh gas and I put a little in each cylinder. I do not have a fuel pressure test kit. I will have to borrow one and test that next week. The Crank position sensor tested good.

    Possible GEMS issue

I just went back and re checked the fire. I pulled the plugs, they are clean and dry. Sniff test results, it smells like they have been firing. Each plug inserted into the coil pack and hit the start. both have fire. I pulled the pugs out of the coil packs and used a circuit tester to see how...

    Possible GEMS issue

No kidding. I am going to empty the fuel tank and put fresh gas in and see what happens. I doubt it will change anything but at least I will have checked it off the list.

    Possible GEMS issue

I tested the compression. I did a dry test and got about 70 psi on each cylinder. After dumping a little oil in each i am getting 117 and 118 on the cylinders. New plugs are installed. Disconnected the fuel line at the fuel rail and I have good flow.

    Possible GEMS issue

Put new plugs in. the arch was yellow coming off the plug but blue where it hit the head. Charging battery up now. No joy.

    Possible GEMS issue

I have fuel at the fuel rail, I took the rail loose and I had fuel at the injectors. I don't know what the pressure is yet. I have good flow from the pump. Once I get home I will pull the tank so I can check the spark.
