Custom Wide Ski Install and Pictures

VK has been very good. Strong, simple to work on, access and do maintenance. Much more stable than my Venture MP. The deeper lug track is a big traction increase over the older VK models that had very little lug depth.

Custom Wide Ski Install and Pictures

Here's the latest wide ski I made this season. 2nd set since the one above. All made the same. Sold on them for what I do. Not good for carving across steep side hills as you can't sink that uphill ski. I'll leave that for the young guys that like to race around.

    9 inch wide skis

Sometimes not much snow in this area but when there is and the pack on the trails get high and snow off to the sides get deep or just plain breaking trail I like real wide skies. This is my 5th set of them and sold on the protection it gives being up away from the snags etc. buried under the...

    Difficult starting in extreme cold

No, that is the easy and accessible place. It is much more work to install in a place it would do some good close to the engine block. More of the engine compartment junk has to be taken off to get at that good place and dealers either don't realize an install by the radiator does virtually...

    Difficult starting in extreme cold

Yes I resolved the problem of why when the antifreeze heater, battery charger and oil tank heater were all plugged in and had a blanket over the engine compartment I could only start it in 5 degree colder temperatures than doing nothing to warm it up. It started okay doing nothing at 20 below...

    Difficult starting in extreme cold

Sorry for late reply but someone may still see this post someday and be interested in wide skies. They are not hard to turn as they float so much and are actually to easy and so need extra skegs sometimes. They protect the skies and float over much of the rough stuff that wears out ski leg...

Custom Wide Ski Install and Pictures

Just got back back from 4 of us traveling for 2 days north of here. Broke out some fresh trail with 2' of snow on some of it and me and another guy just floated on top. One of the big reasons I have them is protection from things buried in the snow off trail. One of the guys with regular skies...

Custom Wide Ski Install and Pictures

Here's a post that may be meaningless if you're into racing or looking cool on the trail. As my wife said last night when I finished them, "they look ridiculous". Last few machines I have owned I put these wide skies on. Some store bought aftermarket skies get kinda wide like 10" - 12" but I...

    Difficult starting in extreme cold

You are having almost identical start temp abilities to me. Hopefully with more miles on engine it'll even start at minus 25-30F out on the trail in a pinch. I'll reinstall heater and should be able to start in 50 below in town no problem. Most I was able to test the MP in was 40 below F with...

    Difficult starting in extreme cold

Okay Mooseman - got through tearing into engine compartment and also using a schematic for the 2013 MP to ID everything and flow direction. Heater is installed in outlet hose coming out of bottom of radiator. Heated coolant then rises (can easily feel this) and is routed directly into, through...

    Difficult starting in extreme cold

Mooseman - have not been avoiding you on the question just trying to get some schematics for my particular model (2013 Venture MP). The heater is definitely installed in the line from the bottom of the radiator rising upwards. It heats up hose above heater fast despite being only about 250 watts...

    coolant heater

Been working on this start problem also and may want to check out a thread I commented on. http://www.ty4stroke.com/threads/difficult-starting-in-extreme-cold.133621/ Also I have found so far that even with the antifreeze heater, oil tank pad and battery charger plugged in for all night I...

    Difficult starting in extreme cold

Mooseman - It's an inline install in the coolant hoses. A small passive circulating thing that has the hot antifreeze rising into the engine. I think your statement about the ECU is the best theory on this so far. Engine starts better without the coolant heater so it makes sense.

    Difficult starting in extreme cold

Heater was installed by dealer who installs them regularly. It gets hoses hot so seems to work fine. Got an interesting comment by someone below and testing it now. "Stan it sound like you your map sensor is sensing its cold out and the coolant sensors are sensing the engine is warm and may be...

    Cold start solution?

http://www.ty4stroke.com/threads/difficult-starting-in-extreme-cold.133621/#post-1203057 If you got electricity I got something that works great every time at even 45 below F. No sense repeating it all here just go to thread copied here. Stan

Think you'll be seeing mine in the show anyway. Got a Polaris 340 I still run lots also. Two more 4 strokes in town now - Yamaha is sponsoring two guys in town in the Iron Dog Race and they'll be running them. Some people around here are watching this cold start issue and would like to buy them...

    Difficult starting in extreme cold

Battery is new and at 12.8 volts tonight after being shut off for about 6 hours. The engine turns over more than fast enough to start even at 30 below this morning. Had the charger/antifreeze/oil tank heater pad on all night and nothing. Then it warmed to 20 below in day and after 3 hours of...

    Difficult starting in extreme cold

We only have regular unleaded fuel here (village of 200 people - no roads in/out) so was wondering if any of these octane boosters were safe to use and would work . Also heard "heet" (ethanol) should not be used as it's bad for these engines. Someone told me he heard not to use it in Yamaha...

    Difficult starting in extreme cold

Asti - I would think water would be ice at 15 below as well as colder and at 15 below it starts good. plugging oil and anti heaters in it starts at 20 below. Does yours start well at 25 to 40 below without heaters or is it with them . As I mentioned the only way mine will start so far at colder...
