While inspecting my '05 RXER I discovered the end was broke off the RA cable on the monoshock. Also a small tear in the boot (on the adjuster side though - not on the shock side where the cable is bad).

I've only had the sled out 4 times. Each time I've tinkered with the adjustment and NEVER noticed a difference at all. I even told my buddies on our last ride "I think it's just a gimmick - doesn't really make any difference".

Then I discover that the damn cable is broke. May have been broke on the 1st ride - who knows. Anyway, heads up - check your cable!

(Unfortunately, it was midnight last night when I was going over the machine and we leave today - no time to get parts :-( )

You can bet it will be headed to a dealer for warranty work when I get back.

There are two types of people with '05 monoshock's. Those who have had their cable break...and those who *will* have their cable break. It's a defective design...pure and simple. Some have had it repaired and had it break again. Mine went out at around the 200 mile mark. They might as well just recall it since every '05 sold will eventually be back in...

It wouldn't have made any difference when you noticed that it was broken. The RA kit with protector has been on back order for close to 2 months...

Backordered for 2 months????? Just for the stinkin' cable?????

You're right. The design is stupid. How did they expect that boot not to get trashed by rocks/ice, etc..??? It's not shielded and will invariably be ripped to shreds.

The boot is thinner than the boots on most car CV joints - and those invariably rip just from stuff (rocks etc...) thrown up from the road.

Just plain bad design in my opinion.

The cable itself might be available...but dealers seem hesitant to install them until the backordered shields are available...since it is a certainty that they will just break again.

Guess what that thin little boot costs? Almost $60. It's bend over and :moon: time if you're out of warranty.

The cables are available, but has stormbringer said they won't install unitll the boot comes in.

It is not the cable that is the problem but the way it is routed. My Cats with the dial adjust mounted on the bars never had a problem. The whole design is flawed IMHO, both the dial and the cable.

Cable? thats the least of my worries. After 2800 miles my rearshock is junk, the front pivot arm is cracked/welds rusted, missing one inside idler and have two morewith bearings that are junk. This sled has not seen any mud. 98% of the miles were on good to excellent Quebec trail conditions. The other 2% were here in NH being very careful on what little snow we have had. Brought sled to dealer today. Now it is wait and see.

That settles it. Gentlemen....for the very first time in my distinguished powersports career, LaLaLa I will be purchasing an extended warranty.

My dealer got in two cables with the protectors just the other week. The protectors are nothing more than a different style bracket for cable mounting. Mechanic laughed at that. He installed just the new cable without large boot. He put a small boot at each end of the cable after packing with grease. Now there is only a small area for any ice to collect on. He feels very confident that this will last along time. If not, he'll fix again under warranty.

I am going to contact a cable manufacturer that makes them for bikes, and get a braided stainless one. They use ends that are attached much better than these crimp on jobs.

My Cable broke too, if your patient, and not much of the black sleeve is gone, you can actually repair it. It is kind of like putting Co-Ax cable connectors on.
