I noticed a post on here by a fellow who is specializes in 82 SRx 500's (it is his user name as well). Did I miss something? I thought the SRX died with the 81's and didn't return until '98. I know the V-Max appeared in '83 in the form of a 540, but I've never heard of an SRX 500. Are these just modded 440's? Please enlighten me!!

Yamaha called them back. I believe it was an imbalance problem in the clutch causing crank failure. The '83 was an improvement of this sled being bumped up to 540 cc's and it had the 102C Comet primary instead of a Yamaha clutch. Also the name changed of course to the V-MAX probably because of the bike project........"Velocity Maximum".....

Guys, I am the guy with the 82' SRX 500's. If you look at my picture at the left you will see a picture of my 81' SRX 440 and a rare 500. There are about 11 of the SRX 500's confirmed by me to exist. Four of them exist in Finland and Sweden. I own four of them all with correct 500 motors of which one has 37 miles on it and is on display at the Snowmobile Hall of Fame Museum in St. Germain, WI. I wrote an article about two years ago in Snowmobile Magazine about a collectors 17 year quest to find the SRX 500. Too long to write here, but the deal was Yamaha made several thousand of the 500's only to not release them just before December of 1981. They sent about 100 to the US for final testing. 50 went to Alaska to racers and 50 to the lower 48 states for testing and racing. Nearly all were returned and destroyed. Some did not get sent back. Tim Bender raced several in 82 and won on them. The sled was deemed to tempermental for the average user. The motor was ported like a 77 SRX 440. All gas or nothing. No bridge in the exhuast port which is huge. 44mm butterfly carbs which are a nightmare to tune just like they were on the 81's but only bigger! I have had some of the 500's the vintage show in Waconia, MN, St. Germain, WI. and Menasha, WI. If you have questions or would like to see some of my restoration pictures email me direct: toizrit@comcast.net I am always looking for parts! I included a shot of one that I drive around and one that I shipped down from Alaska as a basket case. And a finished picture of the same sled.

Thanks a bunch, 82SRX500! I've always had a soft spot for the SRX 440's, so finding out about the 500's is really cool. The concise history you've posted above is a great bit of information on a sled I didn't even know existed! Awesome! Again, thanks very much. BTW, nice work on the restoration!
