I have a buddy looking at a 2008 FX Nytro. What should he look for? It is completely stock except for 144 studs. Nothing but new carbides have been installed. Looks like a nice machine. It has 3100 miles on it. What's it worth? Thanks

Definitely look at the ski spindles. Compare them against one another by lying down beside the sled and eyeballing the spindles, lining them up against each other visually. If one is more vertical than the other, then there could be some damage to the A arms or subframe. Take a real good close look at the subframe, look for any tweaks, bends, or excessive rust. The 08 subframe is weaker than the 09s. Do a search on subframe issues with the Nytro and compare pics between the different years.

The shock bodies should be somewhat centered, but not quite center. Check for any rub marks on the shock bodies caused by the shocks hitting the A arms in an accident.

Check for loose play in the A arm bushings. Grab the A arms and pull up and down and side to side to feel for any play.

Ask the owner if the update was done on the balljoints too, this apparently was done under warranty.

Can you tell that the weakest part of this sled is the front end?

Grimm is right front is sketchy, though if it was taken care of like mine is it should be fine. Check the clutches for excessive heat noted by small hairline cracks. When running listen for leaky exhaust gaskets.

3100 miles ain't crap on these Nytros. I have 5300 miles on mine and not one thing wrong with it. tell your buddy he is buying with confidance that the 08 Nytro is a strong running sled. Tell him after he buys it to come on this site and gain some insight on how to set it up properly.

The sled is in mint condition. This guy is anal. He even polished the tunnel. He said it was never wrecked. By looking at it, it is in better shape then when it left the showroom. It does have a rattle in the exhaust. The guy thinks it's the "donuts" are these hard to fix? The front end update was never done. OK what's it worth? The guy is selling to get another Nytro. He says once you ride it you will love it. Thanks

If your buddy likes to ride hard, and fast he will love it! Haven't tried mine on river runs or ditches like some Iowa guys do. All trails, but love mine ;)! Once you get her setup to your weight, and style of riding it will be a blast

Going by the prices I have seen $5000 to $6000 is a good price range.........

I had a rattle in my sled last season that sounded as if it was coming from the exhaust. It turned out to be loose rivets on a bracket (under the seat) supporting the muffler. This is easy to fix, the donuts, not hard but a pain.

They are right about the subframe. Check the distance of the chocks through the a-arms, and see if one is forward more then the other. Mine was covered by the dealer. Also if the dealer doesn't see it or wnat to fix it, take it to another. I had it, at the dealer I bought it from getting some minor work,a nd they never noticed it. Then I brought it up to Hauck for a few things, and they caught it right away, and covered it through Yamaha. I also added Ulmers bushing which are a cheap fix, and machined the ball joint at the same time, also cheap. Should help with some new ski's. Then ride her to figure out the suspension, and you should love it. As far as the price the 08's go cheaper because of the bad wrap they received on the front end. So more guys seem to chase the 09's or newer. But for the pricing, I believe they could be a great deal for the hard/fast rider IMO

arteeex,

I was wondering where that rattle came from. Thanks for the tip. Nothing more annoying than that at idle.

Update:

It turns out that you can have both a rattle and blown out exhaust gaskets. I just pulled the pipe off my sled and found all three gaskets were shot. All that remained of one was a little flakey residue. I have about 4,600-miles on the sled.

However, I am certain the bracket was causing the rattle I mentioned previously. With the seat off and the sled running I could see the rivets moving on the shield between the seat and muffler and pushing on them made the sound stop. So, that part is still valid.

Based on my experience now, I'd say the exhaust gaskets should be checked after a season or 2500-miles.
