So I was changing my Oil for the up coming snowmobiling season and I came up with a great way to get the pesky oil cap off of the top of the engine. I am lazy and really didn't want to pull the battery but was reluctant to do the oil change without getting that cap open. I know some people say don't bother with it but damnit why would the manual say to open it if you didn't need to. I made a few futile attepts top reach in from the clutch side to loosen it but couldn't get enough on it to do any good. I sat there staring at it and came up with a plan. I had just changed the hyfax so i had the ends I cut off laying on the floor and noticed that to groove that ataches them to the rail was about the same size as the top of the cap. I cut off about a 2" section of the rail and tested it on the chain case cap(about the same size) and it fit. So i reached in slid the end of the cap inside the end of the piece of hyfax and it basically made a big handle to turn it with. Once I cracked it loose I removed the makeshift wrench from the cap and took it out the rest of the way with my fingers. I worked awsome. A little shorter than 2" would have fit in there better though. So those of you who want to pull the cap on top of the engine try it...it worked great.

I think its just a vent. I guess i could see putting some oil in there would be a good thing with a new rebuild. That way you would have some oil on fresh parts for the first crank.

i did that the first time i changed my oil, never did it again.

oil cap

x2 I don't touch the cap, but your right the manual does say that. Never had an issue though.

Not to sound like a critic, I was taught long ago that it's preferable to change your oil at the end of the riding season. The reason for this is, the dirty oil contains many harmful contaminants that if left in the engine for the entire off season can cause corrosion. Sounded like a plausble theory so I adopted . Just thought I'd pass it along. ;)!
