2014 Yamaha Viper XTX
So I currently own a 2014 SR Viper xtx and I absolute love the machine it the uncoupled skid with the sh*t float 2 in the back is less than desirable for trail riding on top of the fact I’ve had a few quality issues on the arctic cat side of the deal. Basically I’m looking to get a more comfortable trail riding sled and my two options are keeping the viper and buying a Hayes coupling kit plus a full set of coil overs front and back or selling the viper and getting a used 2018 apex xtx and buying a nice coil over for the rear since the front end on the apex already has the yrss, any thoughts?

If you find a 2018 Apex let me know.

Update the viper. Moving to an Apex is going backwards. The singleshot isn't exactly getting good reviews.

That's misleading. There is not a 2018 Apex to be found in the country. At least that's what my dealer told me when they did a search for me.

I disagree. Got me a xtx single shot with a hygear coil over shock. nice ride from moguls to just cruising around in the woods.

He probably was looking in Yamahas warehouses. Not at other dealers which wouldn't sell one to him at least for a price your dealer could make money on.

But then he is right back to where he started. A sled that he has to spend money on upgrading the rear susp.

He doesn't have to upgrade as the 2018's come with the upgraded shock that many are using and love. I did the Hygear due to too much weight i now carry on the machine so I needed a big boy setup as I did on the many other Yamaha's i've owned.

IMO the procross is much more comfortable and capable, although I am a fan of power steering.
I have rode the uncoupled suspension as I had an 18 xtx last year so I agree with the posters claims. I now have the 137 and the rear ride is superior.

A properly setup 18 XTX with the upgraded shock IMO is probably the best I've rode compared to my 03 with a 136" Expert-X suspension and my 08 LT-X GT with the electronic Ohlins and Hygear rebuild all around (very pleased with the work they did). I know others lover the Procross chassis but I also wanted the the EPS so I opted for the XTX.

Yesterday I say down and read every single thread on the site about the Apex and SingleShot suspension and I got the same result I'm getting here, there is one opinion that the SS suspension is absolutely terrible even upgraded it's not that good and then there's the people that say they have great experiences with the SS and that it gets even better with an Elka or other nice coilover upgrade in the rear. Obviously I'm never really gonna find out unless I actually throw a leg over and ride one but I don't think I'll ever have that option unfortunately. Anyway I was just trying to hear everyones experiences/opinions.

i have a 2016 apex xtx that i found as a left over. i did the complaining to get the up grade to the stock 2018 xtx shock. the up grade was worth it. i need to get some time to set it better as i still have a bit of stiffness in the moguls but i am happy with how it is riding. i did up grade the fronts on mine to gytr clicker shocks but have not moved the settings on them as they are already better than the stockers and those where miles better than the stockers on my 11 xtx witch also has gytr front shocks on it. not in the market to up grade to a coil over any time soon as what i have is working pretty good for me atm.

I would think the failure rate for the rear air shock is higher then the front air shocks. One big reason I went Hygear.
