87 Octane, this is really what everyone uses...

So with gas stations that market 92, but it's been their for months, what can we do to the fuel to make it come back to 92. Add octane boost and is it safe for the motor. I'm running an airbox mod, controller and ignition box.

SJ,
I guess you can't get a more complete answer than that... My answer is that Yamaha designed a motor to run with 87 octane in it and with all the compitition out there if they could get more power or reliability with higher octane don't you think they would recomend it ???
But if these guys think they know more after all the advise that they have gotten then let them...These are the same guys who will get in the long line at the bank 'cause they don't know any better

LB, I do run higher compression and more timing. I certainly agree that anything other than 87 in a stock sled is a waste. Droping 400 rpm or losing more than 1-2 hp I do not think so. In my case I need to run more than 87 so I am saying that I will just run 93 and not mess with anything less just to be safe.

If you notice i said what i have observed on my sled with the difference between 87 and 93 octane. May you and others have not seen the same thing as i have. To say i do not think so what is your basis for that? When was the last time you rode my sled to experience the same results? Or do I just need to get my eyes checked? LaLaLa

Bismark, I was not commenting on your specific sled. There are many factors that can effect rpm. I do not think that 87 to 93 can make a 400 rpm difference. My guess is that 400 rpm is good for 7-8 HP. It is possible that the day you changed to 87 there were loose snow conditons then maybe the next ride your sled was more broken in Blah Blah Blah. I was simply stating my opinion on this matter so do not take things personal.
