I receive a report from the local avalanche center in my email each day. This morning Eric added this as a reminder:

"In British Columbia, a group of snowmobilers were hanging at the bottom of
a slope while their buddy rode to the top, triggered a slide and buried
them. One had his hand showing and was rescued. The other died. A good
reminder that when you're in avalanche terrain, never ride or slide above
other people. Be safe! -Eric"

I see this pretty often. Don't let your guard down boys.

That was my friends uncle that was buried 30 feet down. They were eating lunch. One other bit of advice. When an avalanche is coming, get out of the way. The person that died didn't think the avalanche was going to get to them, so he didn't try to run. The 4 people that didn't get touched, got onto their sleds and drove out. There were 2 that were buried, 1 to his waist and the other with his hand sticking out. Those two tried to run away on foot. And the one that died didn't try to run at all.

Sabbath, I read about this on SW. Sorry to hear about your buddy's uncle. One other thing to mention is that even when eating make sure you keep you pack on your back. I read from one of the guys that was there that all they had to dig with was hands and a windshield because their gear got burried and after close to an hour they were still 3 meters shy of the beacon signal according to their recievers..

How about not stopping at the bottom of an avy path to eat your lunch, you should always be wary of your surroundings.Linc
