last ride of the winter heard the same sound coming from my tunnel. Wuff ,Wuff, wuff kind of sounds like a steam engine at idle. anyway this is the same sound i heard at the end of last year and it was the donuts. so i have it apart to the point where i am trying to get the rusted bolts off. one clamp is lose a little and has turned itself down just like last year. almost same miles 3500.
My question is #1 has anyone had any luck or solved the problem with dounut failure by grinding off some of the shoulder to tighten clamps more?
and #2 how much did you take off.

I used ultra copper last time not sure if this helped will know when rusty bolts are removed and get a better look.

thanks in advance

This is what I did; I ground off some of the spacers so the clamps squeeze down on the pipes a little better. I then cleaned the bolt threads and the clamp threads so there is no debris to interfere when tightening the clamps. I then put 2 stroke oil on the inside of the clamps, the threads and on the allen head bolts and on the pipes where the clamps sit. This will assure that when the clamps tighten down on the pipes it will allow the pipes and clamps and to slide on one another to help draw them together without interference. If the clamps or the bolts hang up on anything at all it may appear that they are tight and when they vibrate and get bounced around they will absolutely loosen up and cause premature gasket wear. Good luck.

how much did you guys grind off 1/16th 1/32nd of inch??

I scribed and ground around 1.5mm (1/16") off the barrel spacers. I measured the smallest inside diameter of the clamp after I ground the spacer and it was still slightly over (0.5mm) the diameter of the exhaust pipe. The titatium y-pipes are so "tender", I didn't want to crush the pipe by taking too much off the clamp spacer.

I also used Permatex Copper Sealant last time I changed donuts, and found it did not stand up to the heat, it was all burnt/dissoved away when I took it apart after abt 3,000 kms.

I also used the ultra cooper and there was know sign of it when i got the clamps off. Strange thing, the donuts are fine. the one clamp that got lose must have been the one making the leaking noise but hardly any ware on it. all the faces of the donuts are smooth and look reusable. I will change them out with new ones and remove a little off the shoulders to allow the clamps to tighten a little more.
Thanks for the feedback.

Christmas is only 7 months off
