hey
i was wondering if anyone out there ever install the yamaha factory 2003 rx1 mountain rear heat exchanger update. the 2003 rx1 mtn never came with a rear heat exchanger. i have bought one from a guy over B.C. and i want to knowif anyone ever installed these update kits before. i have instructions and all coming with the kit but i just want to see if anyone have installed these before. i want to just have an idea what i have to do before i get this kit. wha would i need to do. there any place online that i can look at pictures showing me sep by step how to install this kit? or does someone have a picture of this kit installed on there rx-1 mountain? please post a picture of under your tunnel on your rx-1 to give me an idea how it looks on the rx-1 mountain. here is a picture to show you what this kit looks like. please get back to me!
Thanks and also could someone list all the updates for the 2003 model rx1 mountains? i want to get my sled up to date! i have a mountain performance aftermarket tunnel extention, way better than the stock one! and also i have this rear cooler comming! is there anymore updates i will need to get?

To make the cooler work with the MPI tunnel ext; you'll need to make brackets that go at the rear so that the cooler is on the same plane as the stock ext. I don't run the cooler so I can't help you with this part.
As for updates from Yamaha. There was the new float bowls, a tech bulliten to remove rivets that rub on the seat (check the bottom edge of your seat in the middle to see if they have been ground out) and there should be rubber stops on the alluminum hoop going across the front of the fuel tank. Screws for the painted tank cowl will rub the under side of your hood if the rubber stops aren't there.
Alot of guys also added a coolant shutoff for the carb heat. This was not a Yamaha update but should have been. The sled will flood out when stopped for a break after a hard ride. Thet shutoff helps with this problem

there is a pipe that goes through the rear of the sled which is just there going from the LH and RH side heat exchangers. i will need to take that pipe out of it and the cooler needs to go there, or i mite extend it back a little more than it is support to be because there is a piece of aluminum blocking the cooler going into where the pipe goes across the rear. i mite grind the piece of alluminum away so then i wont have to make brackets for the rear cooler so it can fit on my mpi tunnel ext. let me know what you think and i will have a picture shorty of what i'm talking about!

I believe you will need to cut part of that alluminum piece out regardless of aftermarket or OEM tunnel extension so that the two tubes coming out the sides of the new exchanger can slide through and out where that cross over pipe is. I think that is what is shown on the left illustration in the instructions of the picture you posted. I think the exchanger is alot narrower than the tunnel extension to allow the pipes to slide though the holes where that pipe goes though also. This is all speculation by me though since I have never done an istall orpersonally seen one installed.
I don't think the rear cooler is designed to ride in front of that alluminum piece where the cross tube is. It doesn't look like there would be much clearance if it is designed for that area and the two tubes would point backwards rather that towards the two running board exchangers. That would cause a need for a loop in the coolant hoses rather than a straight shot like they make to the cross over tube. That would also cause the bleeder (located center/bottom of the exchanger you pictured) to be located clear up in the tunnel above the track.

You might get away with the cut line you have in red. Maybe before cutting all the way though; try just enough for the pipes to slide through when pivoting the exchanger up once you have the exchanger pipes slid in through the side slots that the cross pipe exits through on each side.

i mite not do any cutting yet. i will just take that cross-over pipe away and i will bring the cooler back about 2 inches past the aluminum and make new holes for the coolant pipes to go though. this is the only way i think it will work. i would like to see pictures of what people done to install there coolers on aftermarket or stock tunnels!

Here's a thread I found with the search function. Maybe try bringing this back to the top for some more comments. Notice my post on there haha. I still haven't needed the cooler; just my ice scratchers keep a good 50/50 coolant mixture at 165F max running under boost. Edit here's the link I forgot to add

hey, do you think the viper or sx cooler ill work on this sled better than the updated rx1 cooler? i have a aftermarket tunnel and i say these coolers will be better than the one i can get because it doesnt have a weird shape that goes with the stock rx1 tunnel that tilts down instead of up! any suggestions?

there is suppost to be pics of the cooler under the tunnel on the link you gave me but for somereason i can see the pics! i need to see how i can get this to work. i dont say this will hit the track because i think i'm just gonna bring it back from the pipe and make new holes for the pipes to go through! u think this will work?

Yes it should work with slightly longer hoses. I'm guessing you're exit hole to the side would be somewhere near the rear of the black oem trim covering in my picture. You should get by doing that without hitting the outer rolled up edge of the MPI tunnel ext.

ya...around 2 inches away from the other holes for coolant pipes to go thorught and yes the coolant pipe holes will be around the end of the black plastic trims! so do you think this will work? i am having the cooler in line with the running board coolers so there will just be a straight holes going from the rear cooler to the runnign board heat excangers. t will not have any loops! so i say this will work! i dont want to cut anyting under the tunnel, i'm just gonna make a place for the coolant pipes to go though but i will make sure before i start cutting!
Thanks
Thanks
