Have any of you had a backfire when you get off the throttle, and the sled is slowing down?
I've had an occasional one, but I had a lot today. It was about 23 degrees.

It might be a bad exhaust donut. How many miles are on the sled? I've been around a couple of 5000+mile Apes with the same condition.

My Attak does it when I come off the lake WFO. Shoots out a nice flame too. The motor gets loaded up with fuel on a long run and then the heat and compression blows it out when you let off. Nothing to worry about unless you have a gas tank strapped on the back.

Ape,
I have over 6000 miles.
Is it a big job changing the donuts?

The sleds I saw had the dealer change them so I don't know. I think they are pretty well buried in the sled.
The one sled would roll to a stop, get shut off and then backfire 10 seconds later. His donuts were almost gone after 5500 very hard miles. They were dealer replaced and he put 2000 more miles w/o problems.
As for the other diagnoses, why would the mixture change?

Doughnuts
It is your exhaust doughnuts. I changed mine after 3500 miles and the two center ones were gone, only some metal fiber left. It would be nice if the exhaust would slide back far enough to replace them without removing the header pipes but no go. Use RTV when replacing them. Pain removing everything to get to them.

Donuts a good place to start several guys have had cracks in the flex pipes or the Y pipes. Y's are a bit less likely with titanium but they are thinner and if you are studded and threw one you may have a puncture. I was in reverse and sucked a rock into the tunnel and cracked my pipe and it caused a lot of poping as I let off.

backfire
I'm going to replace the donuts, but none of you that have replaced them said if you had a backfire when slowing down. I would have thought it would be a rich mixture, that might cause it.
Has anyone had the backfire symptom, that was caused by the donuts??

Backfire
YES I Did. See my post above for the fix. It would backfire every time I got off the throttle. I also have had it backfire after it has sat for a few seconds turned off.
