When I blow belts on my Apex it is not pretty. It sheds into tons of small pieces and the cords always get wrapped in the secondary and force it to stay open. The only way I am able to get it to close is to remove the secondary, torch some of the cords, and back the nuts off some on the helix. (Not something I can do on the trail or lake)
Is there an easier way to remove the cords so I can ride again without having to be towed after the belt breaks?
I need some suggestions on extending my belt life. I understand running 10800 RPM's for miles at a time is not easy on the belt but I would like to be able to make them last at least 2000 miles. Instead of the 800-1000 I am getting now.

Pop it off take it apart and clean it out. I can take my secondary apart on the trail easily. To change preload etc.

Can I remove the helix bolts completely? I do not know squat about clutching. Won't the spring unload if I do so?

Yeah the helix will come out and unload the spring. Just retwist and reinstall.

check your clutch alignment, center to center and offset, you should not be blowing yamy 8dn belts, dayco yes(softer). i have held my rx at 10300-10500 for 23 miles and have never blown a belt. the most important pieces of blown belt to remove are behind the primary, as they will take out the pto seal.secondary can be removed and diss-assembeled in a few minutes trailside. if you are not familiar with it do it at home, its not too hard.

I carry a good pair of needle nose pliers in the plastic tool box yamaha provides with the sled.
I use these to pull out any belt cords that get stuck in the clutches.
i never had a cord i could not remove, but i can tell you i have spent a good 20 minutes just pulling cords out of the secondary.
Not a lot of fun but it works.

I have 7 grand on my Rx-1 and have changed the belt only once, just because it had 6 thousand miles on it at the time. Have not heard of this problem before. Must be something else wrong. Have held mine wide open for great lengths. with no problems! Yammi makes a great belt!

you must have some MAJOR issue if belts are blowing apart at those low miles...many members run 5000+ miles on same belt....even if you are doing holeshots every minute you should get more miles then 800.
check OFFSET to be within spec....15mm.
