I have my apex jackshaft out and trying to replace the bearing clutch side. there was nothing wrong with it sled has 4500 miles thought since i was in there i would replace that bearing also, yah right. The question is do i need a special tool or tools to tighten that locking colar, and does everthing need to be all lined up before i try to do so? Thanks for any input, Jeff

Jeff: There is a special tool that makes this a whole lot easier. I just borrowed it from my dealer. You need to be sure to tighted the chain case side first, this will align things for you. Also, make sure you keep track of all the shims and spacers.

There is a How To on this in the tech section. I didn't need the special tool just make sure you have the bearing installed correctly. I.e. the bearings inner race is tapered, it's hard to see but it is. If you try to install it backwards you will never get the lock ring to tighten. Don't ask how I know this. :o| :o| Any way if you follow the How To it should get you there. As said above use the chain case to align everything. If you haven't taken it apart measure the distance from the end of the shaft to the race, then compare when your done and you'll know if it's off or not.

Thanks guys i have the new bearing installed into the frame and the snapring installed, bolted up the inner part of the chain case to get it alined. Thats when i started having problems getting the spanner nut to start, once started the collar was locked in place and the nut wasnt tight or the collar in the right spot yet, I will bet I have the bearing in backwards, thanks for the info i will look it up later and try again, still may need that tool. Thanks Jeff.

Just went out to look at the new bearing that i installed, tried the collar from the other side it fits perfect. I just need to pull out the bearing and turn around , thanks again for all the help. Jeff

That would be my luck on a 50/50 shot.
