Sorry for the dumb question guys, I have already talked to my yamaha dealer and wasn't given much help. I'm getting ready to put the nytro away for storage and asked the dealer when to change the oil and they recommended now because of all the acids, and then not to start it at all over the summer as it will just add acid back to the new oil. So I said well if I do an oil change now I'm going to have to start it to circulate the oil and he said that would just add acids back to the fresh oil that is just going to sit in the sled all summer, he just recommended changing it and not starting it till like October or november but I dont know this doesn't sound right. What's the point of changing it since the fresh oil would just be sitting in the tank? This is my first 4 stroke sled so any insight would be appreciated.

I always change the oil and filter when prepping for the riding season. I always bring my sleds home around the September time frame to add another mod and prep for the season. Have done it this way for many years as I have had the Apex since 2006 and the Nytros since 2008. Never had an issue!

i change mine in the fall, just my opinion... i know theres alot of guys that swear by changing them in the spring

Me too, I have never heard of anyone having problems specifically caused by leaving the used oil in it for the summer and changing it in the fall.
Some of the guys i ride with didn't even put 10 miles on this year

I change it in the spring and run them some. The acids
build up over time not immediately. Better to flush the
parts with fresh oil than let the old contaminated oil sit
on them all summer.

I start the pig once a month and get her nice and hot.
Then fresh oil in the fall!!!!
Really guys don't tell me 2000mile oil is dirty come on...my car Doesnt want an oil change for well over 15,000miles

good luck with warranty if you change the oil in your car every 15000miles.

Synthetic oils have different properties than conventional. I change oil in my sled every 1500 km's, my Dodge diesel 10,000 km's, wifes 4runner every 7000km's, 508 in my boat 100 hrs ( 4500 hard rpms average) my Harley every 6000 km's. Most of the time I look at the oil I'm draining and thinking, could have gone longer.

Its what the factory calls for 25,000-30,000 km (15,000mi-18,000mi) dealer serviced when the car calls for an oil change...wont have an problems with warranty,

I usually go 8000 to 10,000 on my work truck (ford ranger) mainly because I don't have down time to change it. Its really surprising how clean it looks with that many miles. Just make sure you check oil levels when doing longer intervals, like most people don't do haha ill still do my sled once a year

I got a 91 ranger for work didn't change the oil for 2 1/2 years, just added when needed ...she got 375,000 miles on it doesn't burn any oil runs like a champ

IMHO, spring service is a good idea for more than just oil. New grease pushes out water and protects from rust and an inspection buys you time to get parts and install at your leasure rather than when your dealer is jammed up in the fall. You know all those quality front end bushings that never wear out!
Oil change....honestly, what matters is that you change on the recommended interval or seasonally if km/miles aren't exceeded. I have never ever heard of an engine failure due to oil change spring vs fall, nor any significant reduction in engine life.
Acid accumulation, or oil degredation is mostly affected by running hours, so new oil remains new even with a few starts.
Our company samples oil in our mobile equipment fleet, some of those pieces are stored over the winter. From honda gas pumps to Cat off highway trucks. We typically sample oil before and after winter to ensure no water has entered the oil due to condensation/freezing but for us, it's running hours that is the real issue. So if you have high hours on your oil and want to avoid the corrosive effects, change it out in the spring. If not, your choice.
