Been riding off and on all winter now and had a belt start to fail on me on Sunday. Almost like clockwork every 2,000 kms or so. This time was about 1700. This is the 4th belt now with 8700 kmks on it in total. Figured I should be getting a little more then that out of it so today I started checking things out more. Found the clutch alignment was off a little bit. Took a 1mm spacer out from behind the secondary and that brought it back down to about 15.5 mm offset. Clutches are very close if not square with one another. I measure front and back on the secondary and they were almost exactly the same. Hard to get a exact measurement holding the straight edge and measuring with the caliper at the same time.

I pulled the secondary off for a closer inspection and the spring measured just under 75mm which the book says is the tolerance measurement. The ramp slides are wore down very close to the 1mm spec. The bolts for the secondary clearance adjustment are wore down as well and need replacing.

Primary clutch didn't look to bad aside from some play on the bushings on the weights and the rollers.

Just wondering how much of each of these things actually play into belt life and what should be changed first. Ideally I'd rebuild it all but at the moment I'm considering the secondary as the more important one. Also cheaper lol.

I haven't really done much work on the clutches themselves really. I've replaced some parts on previous years sleds but have never gotten into changing weights or springs or trying to customize them to me.

Tips and advice are always appreciated.

I was mashing the ramps off my secondary until I had a new bushing installed in it. I then burned off a section of the top of my belt. I believe I had too many shims on the outside of my secondary. (Too many spare parts laying around lol.) We will see if that solves that issue. I am told the secondary should float about 1/4 of an inch and I didn't have that much. I am going to assume you have them clean? How many miles on it? Many people claim new belts need to be washed and broken in also. I wont agree or disagree. I just try to take it easy until its warmed up.

There's just over 5,000 miles on it. Clutches have never been worked on aside from general cleaning and inspections. Manual spec for the free play is 1-2mm or .04-.08 inches. When I took the shim out on the inside I'm at the end of that spec. Have 2mm of free play now. Wish they have a actual spec for wear on those bushings. They are smooth and don't appear to have much for wear. I've always tried to break in new belts but must admit in my riding that's a little hard to do. No groomed trails to ride. Snows starting to get deep now too. After today we should have around a couple feet of powder now so the sleds working a little harder for sure. I ride mostly all off trail. Or ungroomed trails in the forestry. Lots of times breaking trail as no ones been in ahead of me.

Well I went ahead and ordered some new parts for the secondary anyways. going to leave the primary alone for now. maybe rebuild it next fall. We'll see if this helps with the belt dust much. Hopefully have it done for the weekend again. None of the dealers in a 125 mile radius stocked any of the parts so I had them expedited from the warehouse. Picking them up at the dealer that's 125 miles away from me as I have to go that way anyways.
