I have been using 5W-30 Yamalube CW-4 cold weather formula in my '05 Rage since I bought it since that is what the owners manual called for.
I notice they now offer 0W-30 Yamalube 4-S extreme cold weather, which appears to be a synthetic oil.
Can I safely use the new oil since it does not call for it in my owner's manual? What have you guys done in your RS models?
I have never had a starting problem with the conventional CW formula although it can be a little stiff in the morning when it is below zero.
Thanks.

The new 0 / 30 semi syn is what they recommend... My vector booklet said to use 0 / 30.. When it was new all I could find was the 5 / 30.. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm .. Then they released it in time for my first oil change.

When you guys are changing your oil type, do you change the filter too?
I know that when you change the oil, you don't have to do the filter until 12,000 miles. But I want to change over to the Amsoil 4-stroke oil, and would have some heartburn knowing that there was still some yammi oil mixed in.

.This would be up to you really... For peace of mind, and $14.00 go ahead and change it.. But if it's not your 500 mile first oil change then that verrrrrrrrrrry small amount of oil in the filter shouldn't hurt anything.. Oils will mix freely from one brand to the next.. :ORC MM.

I've switched to Mobil 1 0W 40 full synthetic. I also always change my filter with every oil change.
full syn doesn't break down like conventional oil, right.?
so with the full synthetics, can you go several years without changing your oil if thats how long it takes to accumulate the miles of the recommended oil change interval???

synthetic, mineral or whatever.... will not get rid of the contaminents produced by many sources, post combustion residu & condensation to name a few; in where hi RPM, hi duty cycle & extreme temp variation just make this worst. Use good oil is fine, use the best is fine too but dump it at time and all the sh!! that goes with it.
And yes.... don't let some of it in, dump the filter too. And if you can sync your oil change just before the storage at end-of-season, then its even better.

Check with your dealer i don't believe you are supposed to run fully synthetic oil because of starter slippage.

Read all about it right here. It's a semi-synthetic, NOT a full synthetic. And Yamaha now specifically recommends this new 0W-30 oil for all the older 4 stroke sleds that had 5W-30 written in their owner's manuals. It's their new replacement 4 stroke snowmobile oil across the board....
