Custom exhaust

I have been thinking about making a custom exhaust. I want to cut the exhaust off about halfway, then put a turn down on so the exhaust dumps out right past where the track tapers down. I have seen this on a few mtn sleds but was wondering what kind of problems am I going to run into? What kind of power am I looking at or am I going to loose power? If I do this I should take a considerable amount of weight off the back of the sled and should help keep the tunnel from bending that the 06 GTs are known for. I do like some of the exhaust out there but truly don't feel like spending more money on a sled I barely get to ride now.

Are you going to run a muffler or just run a straight pipe through the tunnel to the track area? If straight piped...you will most definitely loose power (not to mention be as noisy as hell) as the engine relies on back pressure which is created by the muffler. Someone correct me if I am wrong....

There are companies that make tunnel dump exhaust systems though..mostly geared towards mtn riders.

Try just starting your sled without the pipes on, you'll put pipes on.... been there, done that..
You could always try looking at a bike can, and some of the newer bikes have small cans that may be able to be mounted underneath.
I must ask - why?? Custom exhaust would be cool, but don't try too hard to re-invent the wheel. You'll end up running the risk of an obnoxious sled that won't keep up with your buddies.
Keep in mind that even with the undertunnel exhaust, you shoudl be very careful with the heat that will be dumped under the tunnel. Even though the pipes on a stocker are hot, the majority of the heat is disipated outside of the sled. By dumping the heat under the sled, you could have other issues. Melting ice near the heat source will re-freeze once it gets far enough away, which could collect in places where it could cause damage to moving parts, or freeze up the suspension. Just a far out there thought...

Let me give you some helpful advice from experience with both types of exhaust. It sounds awesome with an under tunnel dump, there is NO heat issue's except keeping things thawed better and it's quiet if your riding in any amount of fresh snow, 4-6" or more. If your going to do this you need to remember the stock seat accomodates the rear exiting exhaust, you'll have to make a support bracket for the rear of the seat and seal the tunnel opening with a piece of aluminum plate or buy a Boss or Mnt.Mod seat that's made for under tunnel exhaust and stil need to seal the whole with a plate. If you make an aluminum seat support bracket you can also incorporate a battery holder and put a 7lb Yuasa battery in the rear moving the 15 lbs from the nose and relocating it to the rear. I've done this and it works nicely!
 
this is actually a pretty cool mod.! i have ridden with guiys who have done it and it is a cool sound and seems to improve performance a bit. contact kevin, "Edge_kw" on the site, he has it on his warrior and might be able to give you some advice. he ususally doesn't spend much time on here until winter but he is the man to talk too!
 
I have an under tunnel exhaust that Matt at Sledtech did for me. I am using a boss seat with a custom plate and taillight to cover the rear section where the exhaust used to be[/img] The only problem I have had is the muffler cracking. I have to have it welded twice and it is quite a job getting out. As far as performance I don't think I got any great HP gains. Sounds great. If you bury it in the snow it will sufficate the engine and stall with the snow packed in the tunnel.

Thank for all the replies! I am talking about running without a muffler currently, but was also planning on looking into a bike exhaust. I would prefer to run without an exhaust, but if for some reason I have to put a muffler on I will. Excell sells an under seat exhaust with a muffler.

before i could finish typing my first response two new posts were posted. Taillight it looks good, did you have to change the seat? I wanted to run the cutoff then put some metal over it to separate it from the seat, I was then going to make two dummy exhaust tips to stick out the sides.

After talking with Edge_Kw I believe this could be a good project, not sure when I'm going to be able to start though. I believe I am going to go with a 3" x 12"- 15" glass pack, unsure of which manufacture yet though.

The smallest o.d. glass packs iv'e so far Smithys @ 3-3/4" . I have them on my 49 ford street rod
