Bought a 15 ltx le late in the season and only have 300km on it (roughly 200 miles). Is this too early to do the first service on it? I have to bring it in regardless to get the brake line recall done on it so it would be nice to get everything done at once.

Your a few miles short for first service but not a big deal so I would say get it done now with your recall and then enjoy your season. If anything, good piece of mind knowing your starting the season with fresh oil in your nearly new sled, not 1 year old oil. Nice sled bud!

Your engine is still very much in break-in. I would wait at least until 500 miles as your engine will continue to deposite metal into the oil. I'm more comfortable going a bit over than under on break-in mileage. If you change it now, I'd be wanting to change it again at 800-1000 miles...

One more thought, remember that the computer won't even let the engine wake up until 300-500 miles. The computer finishes its break-in period as late as 1000 miles...

Who told you that? Unless something has changed for 2016, there is no "break in mode" on the computer. The engines are quite tight from the factory and can take 1000 miles or more to loosen up. You will notice more RPM through the first few hundred miles.

Dealer said they had a program in it to keep it rich for a while. Am I wrong?

So no harm in running it with last years oil for another few hundred miles? The chaincase oil is also changed during the first service correct?

I wouldn't worry about it for a couple hundred miles. The biggest concern is to get rid of as much break-in metal shavings as possible with that first oil change. At roughly 500 miles, the engine will reduce the rate of metal deposits. Some people will tell you that you should change your oil at the beginning of the season to get out and ensure there is no moisture in the system. I don't completely buy in to this philosophy for a couple reasons. The main reason is you have vents in your oil system. As soon as it heats up for some time, it will boil off. I'd rather store the sled with fresh oil and change it at the end of the season. Because you are still in break in, I'd wait until 500 miles or between trips after 500 miles to change it; if it were my sled. My viper was changed at 540 miles. The apexes were changed at 650 and 780 miles. We were below 500 miles one trip and at 650 and 780 after the next trip. A little long won't hurt anything. On the other hand, changing early will cause excess metal to be in the system for much longer if you don't change early a second time when transitioning to normal maintenance schedule.

I've never seen it on Vipers or any other Yamaha product

Ok, maybe I'm wrong here. I'm just restating what a dealer told me, I have no first hand knowledge about programming. Mind you, this is a dealer that I ran away from if that is any indication...
