For those of you that use a GPS I have a few questions..I know nothing about using these things but have been VERY interested for a LONG time. So I finally bought a Meredian Platinum last week but I am leary of mounting it on my sled as I do not know what to expect. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

SIGNAL-
Do you keep it in your jacket when you ride of mount it to your sled?
If you keep it in your jacket do you NEED an external antenna or can it pick up the signal without one?

MOUNTING -
If you mount it to your sled did you mount beside the throttle or somewhere else? Did you use a RAM mount or soemthing like it? If you used a RAM mount how long of an extension did you use? Whatever I do I want to attache to the handlebars somehow. Pictures would be great.

If you mounted it to the handlebars, does it work well in the cold? When does it NOT work?

POWER-
Do you use batteries, cig. adapter or straight power to the battery? How did you do it?

GPS mounting

When I first got my GPS I didn't have the 12 adapter so
I put the GPS in my inside pocket, The reception was intermitent but when I took it out of the pocket for a minute everything was O.K. however I found the battery didn't last very long.

I bought the 12 volt adapter & mounted it on the cowling with
the Garmin accessory mount. I have a Garmin so I don't know what
Magellan has to offer.

You shouldn't need any other antenna then the one that came with it.

I understand the RAM mounts do an exellent job, you can either mount them on the handle bar or the cowling depending on which mount you purchase

Hey Suisse...thanks i saw that one...but that's a bit much for me...I am looking for a more simple setup. Something bolted to the handlebars would be great.

I plan on mounting mine next to the speedo (on the side with the tach). I think there's enough room as the Gramin Etrex I have isn't that big. My plan is to use heavy duty velcro on the dash and back of the battery cover on the GPS so I can just take it off when I stop somewhere or anything like that. Once my sled gets here and I get my projects going I'll put pics up. I was thinking of putting it on the handlebars, but any mount I've seen put sticking up higher than I would want it.

I plan on picking up a gps as well, still deciding on the brand. I like the magellan color but I want to shop around a bit.

As far as mounting goes the old thread with the inside the handlebar is preety cool, but I'd like something a little simpler.

So you get reception problems if you carry it in your coat, I would expect the same if its in a windsheild bag to then. I'll most likely look to mount it close to the speedo I guess. I'll know more once I get my gps unit.

I'd like to use the 12v acsessory plug but I'd like it to only be on with the key. Has anyone tapped theirs off the fuse box? There must be an extra 12v line there that can be fused? I need to check the schematic, I'd rather not hook right to the battery. I saw the post in the electrical section using the wires in the handlebars, I had used that for my heated face sheild. I would think the fuse box would be an option?

I just got my Magellan Platinum last night...it's a nice unit but it is a bit bigger than I expected. The Etrex is MUCH smaller (almost by 1/2) However, I liked the Magellan's because you can put up to 64Mb of SD cards into them which is far better than relying on internal memory which the Etrex only has. Besides, the Etrex is almost too small for my liking. I wanted something I could easily read while riding. This is my first experience with a GPS so I will be doing alot of learning over the next few months. If I don't get around to mounting it I will just leave it plugged in a handlebar bag while I ride. I don't even know what the hell I would use it for because I don't even know everything it can do   !

How will I mount it? No idea yet...I am for sure putting 12V Power Point on my sled and if I mount mount my GPS it will be on a RAM mount. I just have to find a good spot somewhere on the handlebars to mount without compromising the hood, handlebar pad etc.

Well guys, I started using my new GPS and it's awesome. I found a great spot to mount it and it fits perfectly.. 8) . Here is how I will be mounting it. I will use a RAM mount rather than velcro. I really don't think Velcro will hold up on the real bumpy stuff. I will drill 2 small holes next to the speedo for the mount and when I remove the RAM mount to sell my sled, I will throw a couple of rubber grommets in there and it will look like they are supposed to be there.. :p Here are a few pics.

PS. You are right Dano. I forgot to mention that I will be adding the 12V adapter to my sled to power the unit.

That looks like a good idea, but batteries don't hold up very long in the cold. Maybe a good idea to pipe it in for power. Don't forget your going to want the light on alot of the time as well.

Also I would install an inline fuse. I wired in my temp gauge direct to the fuse panel and now somethings wrong with my gauge after about 1 months use. The cold seems to do funny things to finiky electronics that are'nt designed for cold temps.

Hey wonder, we can see exactly where you live now

Here are a few pic of my GPS mounted to my dash using a RAM mount. I also bought a RAM mount that will hold a camera, video camers etc. My digital camera takes 35 sec. video clips so I will take some video of my rides to watch in the summer.. 8) As for power I am taking a wire right off of the jumper cable extensions. This way if I need to unhook for any reason it's easily accesible. Also, I am installing a 2 AMP inline Mini-Blad fuse for the GPS power source.
