I wanted to make this post as I've been guilty of making negative comments about the Hauck exhaust being too loud. I installed the exhaust back in late March, 2006 and while I liked the sound initially, I started wearing ear plugs with it the following winter and figured the packing had burned out. During the spring I raced a 160 mile XC race and then later studded my sled and raced a 120 mile XC. I never noticed a major change in exhaust noise except that it was too loud. I figured I just became sensitized to it or fed up or something, but I couldn't even ride it at speed without earplugs because it was so unpleasant. So anyway, tonight I'm working on my sled and low and behold I see the studs have not only chewed up the bottom of the exhaust, they also tore a chunk out of it.

Kinda obvious why it was so loud! I've had guys PM me about the Hauck and I told them it was too loud and that I wasn't happy with it. Well, I'm guessing the exhaust got torn up after my race in late March of last winter and while I never had a defining point in time where I was like "Wow, it seems a lot louder now", I didn't give it a fair shake so I just wanted to set the record straight.

I am bummed that it got torn up by the studs and I'm not sure what I could have done differently to prevent it. I don't think the stock exhaust would have been torn up. My studs are ISR legal so I guess you can't stud down the middle with an aftermarket exhaust?

You were not suppose to stud the center 4" of your track. If you do, that is what happens. I also run the Hauck pipe and his SS Headers on my Supercharged Attak. My Bender triples were louder than these will ever be. I like the sound. Looks like you have some patching up to do, huh? Get back welded together, remove your studs for the center and run them along the rail line. You'll get a better bite there anyways.

For racing I had to run them down the middle. I thought with the stock tunnel protectors I was good to go.

On the Hauck website, they specifically state that you have to either upgrade your tunnel protectors or don't stud down the middle when using their exhaust system.

You can run studs in the middle but not the center 4" you get more stud penetration keeping them closer to the rails becasue there more pressure on the track.

Yeah, I screwed up and learned the hard way about studding. I wasn't aware that I needed additional protectors. I also learned that I ran my track too loose and as it balooned at speed it chewed up my pipe.

Oh well...
