Is there a way to remove the heat exchanger protectors with the track/drivers still in the sled?

I would say that's impossible. It's quite a delicate job to remove them without damaging the heat exchanger so I would never attempt to do it with track and drive shaft still in the sled.

Unless you are a magician... no. Even with everything out of there, it's still not a fun/easy job. Cut mine off with an angle grinder/cutoff wheel. Have to be EXTREMELY careful though... the material the cooler is made of is very thin. Just out of curiosity... why are you taking them off if you're not removing the track? (note- I'm just assuming the only reason to remove them is to clear a taller lug track- which would require removing the track and drivers anyway- giving you access to the protectors.)

I had ice buildup on the protectors and it left an air gap between the exchanger and caused the sled to overheat. so i was trying to remove them without taking everything out.
