Would like to know from people who did install a head shim. How long does it take and from a scale 1 to 10, How hard is it to do it.
I will take all the info you care to provide me!
Thank you

Wow Yummy,
I don't think you will get many guys to give a direct answer to your questions. First and most important is your mechanical abilities which only you have the answer to. It's not quite as hard as sending a man to the moon, and alittle harder than changing spark plugs. First of all Apex's are very tightly packaged and if you add turbo's and superchargers, it tightens things up some more.
I'm a engine builder and I allow 8 hrs to remove the engine on a Apex. Of course there will be some that say they can do it faster, BUT... Pulling the head off is about 3 bolts less work, not counting the head removal, if that makes sence to you. If you have any experience with cam timing/overhead cam engines, It's not a bad job. Get a shop manual and take your time, I like to take pictures when I do something for the first time, it helps with the routing of wiring and hoses. If your new to all this, DON"T DO IT without help. You should take this opportunity to ajust valve clearance also.
To answer your questions, it's a 3 day job with valve adjust and on a scale of 1-10 for me it's a 2, alittle harder than changing spark plugs, but that might not be fair in all reguards.
Hope this doesn't sound like I'm being a smart azz, not trying to be.

Have a look at the engine build post that is a 'sticky' on the top of the turbo forum. Start at the bottom of page 3 and you'll get some idea what's involved with the job. Agree with TT it's hard to say on a scale of 1-10 how difficult the job is; it will be different for everyone.
There is no single thing that is necessarily difficult, but there are several things that have to be done exactly right, or you will:
Best case scenario - be down on performance
Worst case scenario - hurt your motor
Post back once you've had a look.

I stacked the gaskets on my sled. The total job isn't bad but like jim said there is alot of steps!! I second the shop manual and take your time and you will be fine.
When I did mine, I didn't disturb the valve caps and shims, I pulled the cams got all the bolts out and cam chain and bolt the cams back on so none of the caps or shims moved.
Just take super care, lock the door so no one bothers you and go slow.
Also go through the sticky Jim(lakercr) wrote, great info there.
Good Luck

Its a good time to set the valve shim clearances for turbo also!
Well thank you all for the quick responses.
I'm not bad with a wrench and screwdriver and I have a shop manual. Actually I've been changing spark plug, exhaust donut, bearings, suspension, wheels, etc...
Maybe one day I will venture myself to the internal engine zone. I don't love mechanic that much!
I have a quote from a pro shop, I NOW for sure will go to them. Just not willing to make mistake and jeopardy the coming season.
TWIN T: Thank you and you're not a smart a$$!
LAKER: Wow! Very NICE quality write up. That really help me to decide to go external. Thank you

Like others have said its a simple install. Get yourself a copy of the Alpine turbo install DVD. If a picture is worth 1000 words a video is worth 100,000,000 words!
