How is the RX-1 mountain for trail riding?

I am thinking about buying a 05' RX-1 Mountain and trail riding it in the Midwest. Anybody with first hand knowledge have an opinion?

A couple of things that I would suggest:

1. Add the rear heat exchanger (kit from yamaha)

2. If all you are going to use it for is trails - then I would consider widening the front end (get a-arms and steering arms from an RX1 or Warrior).

EDIT - Ignore Point #1 if you buy an 05 (I misread your original post) the 05's will come stock with the rear exchanger.

05 RX1M has a curved rail to lift the rear of the skid off the snow when riding on the trails. It ends up with the ground contact of a 121". There may be some issues with the track lugs though (durability and lack of sideways slippage - which can lead to instability). In all, it really should be a good trail ride compared to other long tracked sleds.

If its being used for mostly trails, you might consider a 9924 track for it.

I trail rode my mtn for two seasons.First season stock.In stock form I found it to be way to tippy with a harsh ride.Would definately widen the front end(you'll need new shocks because the mtn has shorter ones stock)highly recommend the ohlins all the way around this sled!Diff was night and day!Bump capabilities tripled with the shocks,wide front,longer links,12mm sway bar.I relocated the rear of skid higher up on the drop brackets(sucked the skid up into the tunnel more).This reduced ski pressure and allowed me to pull the skis on demand(important tool when trying to get over rough terrain at speed)I think the 05 skid will be way better and will require much less tweeking than 03 and 04.The ohlins were a must for me on the rear (expensive 7-800$ )hopefully not necessary on the 05.I went further and got some aluminum dirt bike bars(wider and straighter)Most other issues have been adressed for 05.I love my mtn for the trail now and will be adding the turbo this summer - get the 05! great machine the 151 hooks up on the trail!

I'm happy with mine as is. I am going to do a few inexpensive mods this summer to shed a bit of weight, but overall love it. Won't go back to a short track and my wife has ordered a new Vectoe Mountain to boot.
