Hi Guys,
I know this topic has been discussed already, just want to make sure I make the right decision. I am mostly a trail rider and studding only for safety. I was initially looking at 96 studs (1.325") down the middle, however my local dealer suggested minimum 144. He also suggested I use mostly double backers, less likely to tear out of the track. What would work best for the trails? Do I need to install tunnel protectors? Would 4" dual carbides be enough (already purchased) or should I go to 6"? I was looking at the 96 pattern from Woody's (all doubles) but including a double in the empty tread, would this work or just a crazy idea!!?? Any info would be appreciated! Sorry for all the Q's.

Did the same on mine and use 8" Woodies up front. Started out with 96 on double backers but added the 48 singles soon after.

Put in 144 Woody's Signature Series with Tall Nutz in my Vector. All are singles and some are on the outside belts. Have 6" Doolies on the front. Setup works well for me = I'm just a trail cruiser...not a ditch banger

Last year I setup my Vector with the same Woody's 144 center pattern with 1.325" goldiggers and BIG nuts. I rode 500 miles unstudded and then another 1,500 miles with studs.
You will love this setup for aggressive trail riding!
The studs made all the difference on lake runs, too. A studded Vector will take a stock Viper off the line and stay 2-3 sleds lengths in front to about 90 where the Viper then starts to walk past the Vector.
I will tell you this, though... The 1.25" track combined with the weight of 144 studs will limit your sled to about 100-105mph...

My personal opinion is stay in the center section of the track if you are an agressive rider. I ripped my track up on my SX by studding the outside. I would think this would be more crucial with these 1.325" studs. They are long enough where I broke several in the center section last season. 4 stroke torque is hard on these longer studs. Hopefully the Big Nuts will help a little this year, without making things so rigid the track suffers.

Does anybody have a picture or template for putting 120 singles up the middle??
Rather than stud and throw on a ton of weight, I decided to try a Camoplast Ice Ripper on my Rage this upcoming season. This 136" w/ 1.25" paddles and 288 studs weighs roughly 5lbs less than my brother in laws old 121" w/ 1" paddle and 144 studs!

i have a 2006 vector er and i had 96 1.325 studs installed, 96 is more than enough and you should not have to worry about them pulling though, you will need 6" carbide thoughSTORM-CHASER said:I put in 144 down the middle doubles and singles with the woodys tall nuts and 7.5 carbids. I respect everyone's personal opinion on stud quantity. What is the old general rule of thumb? One stud per HP to provide adequate traction and prevent track damage? I think this old rule was more suited for 2 strokes. IMO, with the torque that these 3 cyl 4 strokes produce along with the relatively long 1.325" studs, something's going to suffer with two few studs. Hopefully, it is just the studs.
Right now I am taking a break and resting my arm. I was out in the garage replacing last season's bent and broken off studs and adding the big nuts.

agree on the agressive rider issue. I'm not an agg rider so I'm really not worried. Will keep an eye on them tho!

Yeah, I replaced the hyfax on my wife's Phazer 500 last night, and saw that the studs and track are still in really good shape. Haven't touched them in the last 5 years. Hers did much better than my SX when studded the same way. I did notice that the outer studs show a lot more wear.

I took my 06 RS Vector GT for it's 1st trail ride today and I found 96 to be sufficient for the trails. Letting her rip on hard packed roads, not enough for the hard packed take off and also not enough for stopping if you need to stop quick. Overall, for the kind of riding I do, the sled is super, ride, handling, & power is more than enough. I don't baby the thing, I'm not much on jumping or super ditchbanging but one of my fellow riders is and his ride on it made him decide to go to 4 stroke. Loved the sled. I know I'm totally pleased with it. No track howl on mine yet but I only put on 30 miles.
