Ok, went out and bought the Full Synthetic Mobil 1 5w-30, and the KN-147 K&N Oil Filter. Gonna go with this for the 500 mile oil change.

Wonder why Yamaha recommends semi-synthetic oil instead of full synthetic??

my take would be for seating the rings..

I have not run anything but full synthetic in EVERYTHING I own for maybe 20 yrs now....

Semi synthetic in this monster engine, not for me.

Well, gonna go with the full synthetic Mobil 1 5w-30 going forward from here too. Thanks for the recommendation.

Break in is fine, but for life? I wouldnt.

Yes it does say run semi 0w-30.

We changed the oil and filter @ the recommended 500 miles while on our trip in the UP on 3 sleds. The original semi synthetic that came out was awful dirty, with white sludge and very thin like water on all 3 machines. We put in mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic with a K&N filter, feel much better now. We managed without making to much of a mess but, we will be removing the lower panel rivets and replacing with rivnuts like Dan has shown as well.
