I know this is an old topic....Im new to sledding. I just purchased my first sled, a 2003 RX1 ER with 7300 miles. The machine is in great condition and seems to be solid (other than the miles). I have been reading this forum, which is great and saw some posts regarding the jack shaft bearings. Can anyone tell what are some tell tale signs that the bearings are gone? Thanks

Grab ahold of the secondary and try jerking it around there should not be any play there. There was an updated locking collar for the jackshaft bearing on the 03's just get 04 parts the original 03 bearing would pop out occasionally mine did it at 2500 miles.

Thanks so much for replying so soon. Thats exactly what I was looking for.

Your welcome and BTW welcome to Totallyamaha you won't find a more informative site for your sled than here.

merry xmas "can I say that here" lol

You may want to remove the secondary and gently pry out the rubber seal on the bearing with a jewler's scredriver. Take a look at the condition of the grease. You can clean it in place and repack it. Once repacked, then carefully reinstall the seal.

I would pop off the belt and remove the secondary and take a closer look, if it's an 03 with the original bearing it may have worked its way out. I highly recommend upgrading to the locking collar if it is bad.

thanks a lot i will do that. is the part expensive. have a part number.

Click here andput in the year 04 and model as rx1 and you can look at the upgraded parts and get part numbers. Put in the year as 03 and you can see what you have, unless it was already upgraded.

By the way, axial travel of the secondary on the shaft is O.K. The movement that you do NOT want to see is the shaft going up or down/right or left. There should be very little movement in these directions.

Also, you may want to check the PTO Side Drive Shaft bearing for movement also. (just below the jackshaft/secondary clutch) If the bearing is O.K., you can clean and repack it also.

i might be alright then. the shaft doesnt move. the secondary itself moves a little.
