I have replaced my beloved Warrior with a new 07 Attak GT. Prior to hitting snow I have a few questions. Some of these may be contained in some other forums but was looking for a quick hit list with most recent comments.
Rear Shock Spring - I am 250 lbs without gear, From discussions I have seen I will need to go to the bigger fat bastard spring?
Rear Heat Exchanger - I put this on my Warrior. I thought with rad and fan I would not require on Attak but looks like many people are installing. Certainly having on my Warrior was a big help. I also understand price has shot up dramatically.
Studding - I never studded the Warrior but am considering on the Attak. Wondering what the ideal amount would be (don't want any on the outside) so I assume the equivalent of 144 on a 136". What size of stud would you recommend with a stock track. Also with heat exchanger if I install will need protectors and that Yamaha now sells them.
Widshield - The stock one looks very nice but I often ride in the cold. Is there a windshield that available between the stock and the high one that needs supports. I don't like the look of supports.
Any other items I need to consider?
Any comments would be appreciated.

I think you should try the stock spring cranked up first. I notice the 07 Attak GT to be far less prone to bottoming than an 06 Attak.
As for the rear exchanger Yamaha has for an option, It takes up a whole lot of clearance in the tunnel, around 1.5"-2", The track WILL hit it very hard when you do use up all the travel. I don't think you will need it if you run in decent conditions. Ski scratchers may be a better investment when you get into that type of condition, they'll spray snow for the sliders as well as the coolers.
I have one Attak studded and one not. The studded machine vibrates like a bugger, the stock track runs smooth!!!!! It may be the pattern I'm using and I have studded the outside bands. I use all two hole plates and run 144 studs. They run over the front drive wheels and I think that is where the severe vibration comes from. I'm going to put the Ski-Doo extroverts in to see if that helps get the wheels away from the studs. I am going to try the Ice Ripper Track on the other machine just for the icy corners. It should run a higher MPH with it also, as it won't be spinning around 10 lbs of studs and backers.
The stock windshield is awful, I replace all mine with the Mid-Height from the accessory catalog. That is the shield you are talking about. It is the next one down from the supported shield. Have fun, you will LOVE the Attak GT if you liked the Warrior. One more thing you will have to find a way to get rid of the darting/hunting. I use Woodys doolys and a 1/4" rubber shim superglued under the heel of the back of the ski bumper. If you don't cure the darting, it will scare the crap out of you. Its a poor handling machine with stock or single carbides. I'm going to give the Ski-Doo pilots a try before the season is over also. Alot of guys here love them for getting rid of the darting too.

Thanks for the info Mike. I have ordered the medium windshield which appears to be 2" taller.
I will try the stock spring first as you mention.
The rear heat exchanger I suspect I will end up adding as I did in my Warrior but will wait and see. My Warrior had problems with ice bridging in extreme cold and suspect this one to be no different.
Still on the fence on studs. Put 10,000 miles on the Warrior without them. The reason why I'm thinking about it this time is I had a few slippery slope close calls.
As for skis I survived the stock Warrior ones. I did try doolies but did not like them. In reading about the pilots on some other threads I may give them a try.
Thanks for all the help.

07 Attak
S Dog, I'm about the same wt (240lb) and own both an 06 Apex Gt & 07 Attak GT.
I put on the mid-windshields on both, wanted the tall - but did not like Yamaha's tall with support brackets mounted on the inside cowling. This year I've just purchased the Cobra tall windshield (haven't installed it yet). Even with the added protection of the mid, I found in very cold conditions (<10F) I was wishing for more wind protection especially at higher speeds (despite my "natural insulation"). For milder conditions - & low speeds the mid windshield is fine.
I found the stock spring on the Apex to be useless for my wt! Also even though the Attak comes stock with a heavier spring, I was still bottoming out. I put the GYT-8GD47-10-00 Rate-7.1 on the Attak and was pleased with it. For the Apex, I sent the shock/spring to Bruce at Pioneer for re-valving & a new spring, communicating my wt & riding style. Riding the Apex this year I found a VERY SIGNIFICANT improvement!! In retrospect, for the Attak I would save the money & labor for the "fat boy" spring & just have the shock re-valved with a new spring from Bruce.
I also placed a rear heat exchanger on the Attak after a number of times overheating last year, and would recommend it also!
I've studded my sleds not for acceleration, but for safety. Looking at the style & type everyone has their own opinion. I went with the stainless steel Top Gun II 1.325, Stud Boy power plate backers, and longer nylock nuts. If you stud, you will have to put protectors over the added rear heat exchanger. I have 144 on the Apex, and 162 on the Attak.
One additional suggestion, I would change the stock wheels with either aftermarket (ski-doo or polaris oversized) or I put on the Yamaha open style accessory Idler & rear wheels.
Everyone has their own opinion, and what's best for some may not be for others, as it depends on riding style, & types of trails. The bottom line is you'll love the sled!!
