Flipper - Same here, I also compressed the head pipes, and it was still very close.
Towing - I also looked at removing the head pipes from the jugs and I was afraid it would be a pain to re-install them.
I think the next time I change them I will drop the suspension and drill out the rivets so I can move the exhaust back farther.

Just finished putting new exhaust doughnuts in my RS Venture(6800 miles)not to bad of a job, but I found out during reasembly that exhaust clamps were still loose. That could be the whole problem in the first place. I ground about .060 off of the spacer that the clamp bolt goes through and that made them good and tight. Just thought I'd through that out there for anybody elsr working on this project.

My donuts also were shot after 6,000 miles. 2 of 3 were completely gone and only a remnant of the last one was still there. My buddy had the same problem on his Apex, except he has 4 to deal with!
To remove those stubborn clamp bolts and header mounting bolts, use a propane torch to heat them up cherry red and then try. They come out very easy once you apply some heat.
