HI to all. I went for a ride on the old apex and was running good, when I pulled in to the driveway there was oil leaking under the sled, when I searched for the leak I noticed the magneto cover was cracked and there was oil leaking from it. O ya I have a yamacharger bolted to it. So my ? is should there even be oil in there where the stator is. Professional help please
 
If it and thing like a motorcycle then yes there should be oil were the stator is
 
Yes there is oil in that area and is designed that way. It's not a lot and not much holding there etc but it is definitely a oiled area on your engine and will leak. I replaced stator there once and had a bAd gasket which caused a leak for me. If you have a crack you could probably get away with repAiring or replacing the cover. Once removed though you will need a new gasket... Less then $10 I believe.
 
Ok thanks, I'll change the cover and gasket and since my sled is a 2006 with 12000 kms should I change the stator while its open.
 
my understanding is that there should be a seal behind the stator an that what is leaking. the stator does't need oil it should be dry in there.
 
Darv I am no expert mechanic but I did replace my stator and had this side of the engine open a couple times. There is only a seal or rather a gasket around the cover to prevent oil leakage to the outside. The stator does in fact get oiled by the engine oil. Anyone else here could chime in but I am positive that it's normal for oil in that area.
 
Explain to me why the stator needs oil, it is hard bolted to the case then the gen is bolt to the crank shaft which turns around on the stator. There has to be an oil seal in there that is leaking. I will look in a service manual an see
 
I agree with Glacierrr. There is normally oil in the stator area. The stator cover should have a new gasket and sealer to prevent leakage.
 
Darv have you ever opened up rotor cover or done work this area? Not to be rude but there is oil there and it is perfectly normal... I don't know the why or the design decision but there is an opening to the interior of the engine behind the stator and no seal or anything else that prevents this. It's a wet system and no leaking seal. The only way to leak to the outside is the cover gasket failing or cover damaged or cracked.
 
so I took cracked cover off and there is oil in where the stator is, the dealer told me that the stator is a wet system, so I tried to find out what cause the problem and found that the yamacharger is what caused it to crack, the vibration of the charger causes the to happen. So people with yamachrgers beware of what could happen, good thing I was near my home when it cracked or I could have lost all oil and blew my motor.
