The Timbersled mountain tamer skid: is it a pure climbers skid or would it work for general backcountry purpose with some trail riding mixed in.
Can it handle jumping? Not big air by any means but general pounding with the odd flat landing mixed in.
Useless on the trails or not bad??
Also does anyone know if the 153 mtn tamer and the 144 mtn tammer (with ice age rails) would have the same upper arms and shox???
Thanks

I'm reading thru some old posts and found some good info.
Does anyone know if some boggy wheels can be added? Do the stock wheel mounts work??

I would say its a great skid for all around riding.
1) Itll def handle light jumping, not ramp jumps..
2) Its a joy to ride on the trail imo!
3) The Mtn Tamer kit is for all lengths, meaaning you can put the 144 arms and shocks on 174 rails.
If you get the IceAge rails, I dont believe they have the holes cut in them for stock boggies.

Great thanks for the info. Did you ride yours around MN? Any issues with slider wear without wheels? or did you add some?

I would agree with what tapex said. I had a m10 in before the timbersled, and while it is probably not as cushy as the m10 it is more than good enough, and in my opinion has more adjustability in ski pressure. The m10 would let you climb anything you had the nads to, while with proper adjustment I believe the timber will also. However the timber will let you get some lift if you want it for playing where "normal" people ride.

I have the mtn tamer and I got it for two reasons first it was available and quick to get. Ease of install if you went Ez Ryde or M10 air you would have to modify mounting locations.
I do ride bumps and trails and I think the ride is superb!! How ever this will not allow you to get ski lift. It is designed to get on the snow and to keep front down when climbing.
I have jumped with it, nothing extreme but have had no problems.
I would like something that would provide more ski lift but the same powder performance of the mtn tamer.

I rode it here in MN and in central WI.. I havent had ANY slide wear. No wheels, just slidekicks.

X2 and add Michigan. I believe in the hard, spring metal scratchers ( don't use reverse without lifting them up ), but no bogey wheels are needed.

Thats what I am saying. Unless you have a steep enough bank and even then does not hold them up very long.
Being you where you are it should be easy for you to find a cat skid to retro in there.
I have the rear axle wheels, a set just in front of them and one set at the curve in the front plus slidekicks and have not had issues with hyfax.

If you look back at my build I rode the mtn tamer in SW WI and the UP a lot and had ice scratchers along with front wheels and went though a pair of slides in ~1000 miles. Pretty sure the front wheels did nothing and it was all the scratches the kept my slides from wearing. Only negative about ice scratchers is in low snow conditions just make sure there is not sand or rocks under the snow otherwise you will chip up your rails and wheels bad.
As for the ride, it was a big improvement over the stock skid in all conditions. Also if your going to ride it hard get the Ice age rails, stock sucks!

Revster:
To AKVectors point, with my 09 MTX, I had decided this past spring to convert the skid over to an Arctic Cat M skid, and decided to do it right and move the front suspension shaft forward and up to position it correctly....so change a 153 Mtx for a 153 M Cat.
As luck would have it I ended up with a '09 M skid and a Mtn Tamer for an Arctic cat, so now I will be testing both. I'll get around to making a build thread when I get going. But I am very curious to see the differences.
Having searched all the forums here and eleswhere, best I can tell is that both are a huge improvement over the stock 08-09 MTX's boat anchor skid. The Mtn Tamer is lighter and coupled so ski lift is minimal, but it should get on top of the pow easily. I've ridden a crossfire, so I know the ride on the AC is pretty nice....better than my MTX.
Like you, one of my big questions is what combination of wheels and scratchers is best, and does an inside mount 2 wheeled rear axle work well for a NA pow sled? Not to hijack the thread, but I was thinking of outer wheels at the skid radius, BDX front shock wheels and slidekicks, which I already have. Soft loose packed trails to get off trail, and 1000 miles to a set of hyfax would be ok.

OTM,
I run a 2 wheel kit and It works great. I believe it carves easier and side hills better with the 2 wheel kit.
I have a couple seasons on my setup and I love the Mtn Tamer for the deep snow performance as it does pop on top of the snow even with out the change of the approach angle.
My only complaint is that it just will not allow you to hold front in the air the way I would like it to.
My hyfax is still in great condition as well.
Don't forget the antistab kit!!!!

mike would like to see a build thread on putting a cat skid in a nytro, there is information out there on doing it but there is a lot of information left out. looking forward to see a thread on it

I am hoping to start the build next month, once all the parts trickle in, and I can get some of the suspension geometry into CAD.
AKVector, thanks for the heads up. I will definitely add it to the list. I wasn't sure about the anti-stab, as I though they were more necesary for turbo sleds. Does the anti-stab let you run a looser track?
