my fuel mileage
Black John- My Daldton set was as follows:
DPY WTS.-57.5 gms,Dalton helix Y52R46,Dalton Blk/Blue primary spring,Silver Yamaha secy spring (VMax 4 spring) wound at 70 degrees. This setup gave a fierce hole shot, decent midrange(maybe slightly better than stock, but close) and definitely felt flat on the top. Plus the motor as I said before was pegged at 10,500. I think this set-up would be good for the short distance dragger to get the most out of the sled, but with the wt. of this thing a short range dragger is an oxymoron. Lost about 4 mpg with this setup versus stock. Some guys out east like this setup, but I don't think you take advantage of all the torque the motor has spinning it that high at trail speeds. I haven't run time trials between the two set ups, Dalton vs. HH but Matt at the speed shop claims Simon at Cpr did a ton of work with this setup before he let it out. Supposed to upshift at trail speeds with a partial load, then if you pin it spins up to about 9,600 shifts out and pulls to 10,400. This allows you to utilize the torque of the motor, get the benefit of decent mileage and still have the snot when you want it. Beware, there are a lot of people selling #*$&@ out there from exploding clutch kits to popping induction kits. Very little of this stuff is a bolt on and go. Plus some of it either doesn't work at all and or hurts your overall performance. I am not sorry I bought any of these kits because like most of the other guys on this site I was looking for that extra edge. Seems like the more miles you put on these the better they run and a lot of people are pretty much stopping at the clutch kits with traction as that gives you the most bang for your buck.

I have 2200mi on warrior 12-14 mpg, the best I got was 14.7 running 6000-7000 rpm. Will lowering the needles give better mileage? PLEASE HELLP. boone

I just got back from a 350 mile trip and averaged 16.2 mpg's.

Re: fuel mileage
That's the only reason I lowered my needles. I want to squeeze every mile I can out of my sled. Lowering the needles will for sure give you better mileage. But I have noticed a significant increase since I had all the carbs sync'd and set the same.

RXWonder what kind of mileage were you getting before you did this to your carbs? thanks booneRXWonder said:boone said:I have 2200mi on warrior 12-14 mpg, the best I got was 14.7 running 6000-7000 rpm. Will lowering the needles give better mileage? PLEASE HELLP. boone

Last year I was averaging about 15-16 MPG on an average day. This year I was riding hard and through about 8" of snow and I averaged 17.2 MPG. I suspect that I should be able to get 18-19 MPG in perfect conditions (flat and groomed). I have seen alot of guys say 14 MPG and I NEVER got that even when riding hard. The worst I saw was 14.5 last year and that was only once...15-16 was normal.
Supertuner mentioned in one of his posts that Yamaha sets the fuel screws differently for each for EPA emmision requirements.
The service manual calls for 2 turns out for each so that's what I did. I also dropped the needles One Full Clip and found it a touch on the lean side (plug color). I raised the needles 1/2 clip and the plugs are picture perfect right across the 4 of them. After doing this my mechanic sync'd the carb slides and the machine runs flawlessly and idles very smooth.
One guy mentioned that JUST dropping the needles he managed 17MPG. Some guys here will tell you that a 4-stroke need fuel...blah blah blah...but let me tell you...I did NOT notice a difference in performance whatsoever and I was looking for it...! If it ran worse I would have put it back...it didn't. I am also noticing that there are alot of differences here....keep in mind....I am not running anything performance on the motor except the green springs.

From the factory, they come preset at varying turns out from seated as the factory sets the carbs up to meet a certain criteria that it needs to be below a set amount of CO to meet EPA requirements. We found the #1 cyl. to be at 3 turns out from seated, #2 - 2.25 #3 - 2.25 and #4 - 1.5. The factory sets each cylinder individually...this is why the non consistent settings exist.

run 25 miles of wot, probably averaged105-110 with about 5 roads to cross, then went another 25 miles at about 70-80mph,with 2 cold starts with warmups i got 13.7 mpg, this is with ecp kit, fuel screws at 2.25 turns, needle on last clip,165 mains, silver springs.......... machine is running very well, the best i got last year was 19.2 on a warm spring day out putting with my buddy on his touring sled, usually hard trail riding was 14.5-15 and just cruising was 17-18,i dont think i need needle at last clip too rich so will put back to #4 position to get a little gain in mpg there hopefully but very satisified overall

I don't know why but it seems the Warriors are not getting as good mileage as we were last season on the 03 shorty's. I know that the extra track might have something to do with it but there has to be more than that affecting the mileage. Clutch changes maybe? I don't know.
Sorry but I do not consider 14-15 to be good especially for a 4-stroke. 16-17 is OK but good to me would be 18-20.

Lower gearing on the Warrior is another factor, but it still does a lot better than all of the stinking two strokes that I owned. On one trip of 108 miles a buddy with a 2000 Arctic Cat 500 FI took 35 litres and I took 26, so I'm not complaining 8)
It also seems like when the tunnel gets so built up with ice that the track is rubbing up against it  This may have an influence on the mileage also!
