Here is a pic my driveshaft bearing that dissinegrated a week ago. The one on the left is the chaincase side and the dry rusty one on the right is the clutch side. Yup that is only two ball bearings remaining on the chaincase side. This was from my 03 with 6,000 miles.

You would of thought that the rusty side would have busted first
Odd, isn't it? The rusty one still turned, just not like it should. Lesson learned. I will be changing all bearings at the 4-5000 mile mark from here on out. A lot easier doing it in the summer rather than missing a week of riding.

Is the one on the chaincase side in the chaincase. If I keep my sled for one more season I will have to change them so it will not fail on a big trip and ruin my week.

Did it get run in the grass or dirt at all? Fall grass drag extragavanza possibly? Dirt is very hard on brgs. Most think a little excursion down the strip won't hurt but that is oh so wrong.

Knapp,
It was never run in grass or dirt, snirt on the otherhand it has seen... We do like to line up in every open field we come to so it has seen a lot of WFO from a dead stop.

The chaincase side bearing forms the barrier from the chaincase to the driveshaft but it is a sealed bearing so it is not a true oil bath bearing. I would definitely change them in the offseason if your miles are up there. It is not worth getting stranded and losing riding time. Also, isn't it fun to wrench in the summer and fall?
