When it is really cold, my starter keeps slipping and eventually, the sled will flood (I can smell gas).
By slipping, I mean that the motor cranks for not even a second, then the starter spins without engaging.
This is not a good problem to have because if the starter kept turning the engine over, then it would start no problem. But with the free spinning of the starter with little actual engine cranks, it just starts flooding.
Anyone have any suggestions?

What kind of oil are you using? Yamaha claim if you use synthetic oil it can cause this problems with the starter.

Check the starter motor mounting bolts. Also the starter gear head might be stripped. Pull the starter and make sure it is fully engaging the gear to the flywheel.
Or take it to the dealer and pay.

I have amsoil 0-W40 full synthetic. I have always used this right from the first oil change and the problem was not apparent before.
The starter motor seems fine. I guess I just have to run it for a while when I do get it started.
