In my manual it says this can lead to an airlock, no-start and possible engine damage. Really?
This means I always have to carry gas and top it up before heading out on the trail?
Is this true- has anyone had a problem with this? Thanks

I installed inline shut off valves on my carbed Vector. Problem solved.

This is good to know. You say valves. More than one? Where is this installed? Any chance you could please post a pic? Thanks!

I remember threads on here in that time frame were occasionally that would happen. As theCatman said fuel line shut off valves cures it. So yes people have had it happen not sure how often, thankfully I never had that issue after trailer my carbed sleds be they Yamahas or not.

you put the valves in the suction lines between the fuel tank and pumps. said that for all my sleds and have not had an issue yet.

It is true, but doesn't guarantee it will happen.2013 Venture (Carbs 973cc not fuel injected)

I have seen it three times on sleds brought to me over the years. The result is a connecting rod that looks like a dogs hind leg. Not worth the risk to save a few bucks on gas.
Either keep the fuel level low, or do as others here have suggested with taps, or simply un hook the fuel lines and bung. they are very easy to access.

Not the same sled but gives you and idea. These are the fuel shut-offs I installed on my RX-1:

Not sure what Yamaha means by air-lock. What happens is bouncing can cause some fuel to come by the needle valves and flood the engine. When starting, hydra lock occurs and damages parts.
