I changed the oil on my Phazer for the first time last night.
I got the old filter out with some channel locks then put on a k&n with a nut.
I got it 1/2 way on turning it by hand then had to put the wrench on it. It didn't seem really hard to turn but i cranked on it for more turns than I thought would have been necessary. I started it up and it leaked. I haven't torn it apart to wrench on it more yet.
My question is should the filter go on easy (like a car) where i could snug it all the way up hand or is normal to need a wrench and force to make it seal.
Did I screw something up or do i need to bust my knuckles in there and tighten it some more. I think i might have to pull it all the way off and see if i did anything but then i lose all my new oil.

Did you make sure the o-ring came out with the old oil filter? When I changed mine I just tightened the filter up by hand. No leaks.

You nailed it. I got the new filter off and found an old wadded up o-ring under it. i need some better light in that garage or quit work after 4 beers.

once the new filter is on and there are no leaks
i don't think i lost to much oil, maybe a quart, so that's not so bad

stupid mistake....
new filter went right on, snugged up by hand, 1/4 turn with the wrench and no leaks.
Looks like I lost 3/4 of a bottle of oil.
No i have to remember how all those panels go back on

Ray, how hard is it to actually change the oil/ filter??
New to the 4 stroke & never had to do it, just keep adding it from the bottle. People I've talked to said it's a pain in the #*$&@ but if I can save $$$$ and not have have to take it to a dealer every year- What tools you actually use for the job? Been told to switch it to a K+N with the nut and have to run semi synthetic oil.
I'm going to be taking it all apart before Winter just to get a feel for everything so I'm not standing on the trail scratching my noggin trying to figure something out this year.
BTW, square pouch looks like a tool kit/ belt holder right behind the front bumper, does that come out without taking all the front panels off? I do see 1 velcro strap on it, no rear storage thingy either. Thanks for any info

It was pretty easy to get in there. It's a lot to take a apart and the filter just barely fits.
There is a great how to post on here. i made it into a word doc with pictures and printed it out. I could do it now from memory. It's just a tight space and lot of things in the way but very do-able.
You'll need a 17mm wrench for the new K&N filter and a set of long t-handle allen keys to take the air box off. Everything else was normal metric screws and bolts.

changing the oil is easy. it's the filter thats a pain. basically take off the plastic so oil don't drip all over. i took the filter out from the bottom. i then took off the airbox for other update i did later & seen it's way easier with the airbox off. reach down there & be carefull not to break any sensors.
but as ray said, there is a good right up on here for full details.

I just take of the airbox. Then I sessior cup my hand and unscrew. Normaly with othe rthings like cars I would do the same becaues my car you can get a wrench anywere with my headers on. I als use gloves and plastic sacks to prevent my tools and hands from getting oily.
with the phazed I dont care I just let the let the oil drip out of the oil filter. After I power wash past the filter, then I use a fan to dry. No oily mess left!
