This past trip my 2008 Apex developed a strange sudden need for oil! Inspection revealed the new K&N filter was leaking out the welded on hex?!?! Thankfully, we were up for the TY ride and one of our group had won a new Yamaha filter the night before (Thanks Tom for all the work you put into these events). As much fun as getting to the filter is, stock will be my preference going forward! Just posting this as a warning to others!

I have always used with great success Napa Gold (Wix) filters #1358. Have used them since my 2003.

There was a recall on those. It happened to me last year at the end of a hard run as I came to a stop sign, warning lights came on and the sled stalled. When I got off, oil was pouring out. I lost all of it. Lucky I was at the end of the trail and not far from the highway. Had to tow it though.
Yes I attached the recall notice. Certainly more of a safety issue if you happen to be using one of these filters on a motorcycle!

Would have been a blown engine had I not been slowing down to the stop sign!

I had ordered a K&N oil filter for my street bike a few years back. It was a cartridge style and not a spin-on and appeared to be OK. But, they also included O-rings with the filter that were supposed to replace the oem Kawasaki O-rings. Both were larger than the oem's and unusable. I think K&N needs to get their act together.

I just had one split open as well. We caught it at an intersection before it spit out all the oil, but the trail side oil change wasn't real fun. I like the filters because of the nut on the end, but may have to re-think that now, as that seems to be what's causing the issues.
