I have a 2003 RX-1, can I use some other type of SAE 5w-30 or do I have to use Yamalube? My sled uses some oil like most of them do I think. Any suggestions? Thanks

Many people have their preferrences and you will get alot of anecdotal info, but any good quality 0w30 or 0w40 oil will do. Do not buy a bargain or no-name brand oil. I don't believe 5w30 oil is recommended anymore do to harder starting in the sub zero temps. Yamalube is a great oil, but there are other great oils out there for less money. However, if you only need 3 qts and you pay $2 or $3 more for Yamalube per qt, that only cost you $6 or $9 more for one year over some other oil. A small price considering the thousands of dollars it cost you to buy a sled.

I am using Amsoil 0w - 40 synthetic. I have not run it much yet so I can not report my findings but others swear by it. The only thing to watch when switching is the oil is rated for "wetted clutches". I know this is usually a street/dirt bike thing but I have read the starter can have problems without an oil rated for it. I believe the manual says it as well.

I also went to a K&N 303 oil filter as it is once a year so what the hell. They look like they are put together very well compared to a yamaha or fram.

I have a 2005 RX1. I ran the normal yamalube untill 2000 miles. I changed it 100 miles ago to the synthetic 0-40 yamalube and so far no problems with anything. I wish I could afford another YAMAHA snowmobile so I can keep all the miles off it. I know Ill never buy another 2 stroke as long as Im alive.

I'm also using Mobil 1 Synthetic! I've used 15W-40
(because it's synthetic it pumps as low as -49 without any issues) I'm presently using Mobil1 0W-30. I'm also using Mobil 1 75W-90 Synthetic gear oil in the chaincase.
