I've never riden out west (mountains) and really want to before I get too old to have fun. I'm not interested in the scenic wildlife tours. I want the back country deep powder fun stuff. I'd most likely fly or drive out, and would want to rent a sled and most likely a guide to show me the ropes.

Anyone have a suggestion or had a great expeirence they'd like to share?

My only trip was to Togwotee Lodge and it was phenomenal! Fly in to Jackson Hole, ride the van supplied by the lodge, have fun. We did 3 days and it was really enough for us. We had the package. Sled , guide, and 2 meals a day. The expense for meals alone was worth the package price. You also get your sled rental discounted , discount on fuel and gift shop. The gift shop was fully stocked with most everything you'd need in riding gear. Guide was good and took us through terrain we could handle. Oh yeah, you also get a free hoursderve and drinks each evening with the package. Hope this helped ya out!!

I've Ben to Bear Lodge and Cooke City both are very good places to go Bear Lodge is a lot more tame when compared to cooke city so if you prefer trails withmilder backcountry riding I would suggest Bear Lodge in the big horns if you prefer more backcountry riding then trails I would suggest cooke City I personally prefer Cooke city over the big horns

x2 on Cooke City - went there a few years back with my son and it was the best riding I've ever experienced - gorgeous scenery - highly recomend it - look to hook up with someone from the area if possible - guides are pretty pricey

X2 on Viper Dave comments, When we go out west we take our sleds and stay in the Dubois area. We all have long track sleds. If you have a short track sled or short lugged track you will probabally enjoy it better if you rent a sled the first time to see how you like it. We ride back and forth from Dubois to Togwotee Pass, Brooks Lake area. We usually eat lunch at Togwotee Lodge most days. Never stayed at the Lodge, but looks like a great place for the package you are looking for.

I have heard great things about burandt's back country adventures.
there are different packages you can choose from.
my understanding is that one of the packages, you stay with him in an adjacent house. his wife cooks meals for you. and he gives you tours, you ride his sleds. all kinds to choose from from turbos to normal mountain sleds.
talked to some guys that did it and they would not shut up about it. lol

What's the best time to go out? How much do I need to budget $$$$

Late February, early March. Avalanche conditions are typically low, lodge had more availability . Some may say that's too late, but we had mild weather(mid 20's to low 30's), 1 snowstorm with 2 days of deep powder. Any deeper, and the 5 newbies we were paired with the last day would still be out there lol!!

We have been going to the Continental Divide area of Wyoming since 1986. It has all kinds of riding opportunity, from great trails to valleys, mountains and back country. We stay at MacKenzie Highland ranch. We do our own cooking and tack our own sleds. We normally have 12 guys win our group, and we try to keep our trip cost at about $850.00. This ranch is between Dubois and Togowotee Mountain pass on hwy US 26.

Been to Togwotee and Cooke City. If you've never been west, Togwotee can offer pretty much anything you want it to. Like Viper Dave did, get a guide, rent there sleds and let them teach you how to ride out there. Best advice I AP an give you is don't expect it to be anything remotely close to Midwestern trail riding. Really, it's a different sport. Start working out well before you go because you will use muscles you didn't think you had. Also, get some good cardio training months leading up to the trip. You can't begin to imagine how difficult it can be to catch your be breath at higher elevations. If you go out there in shape, you will be able to experience much more. It is amazing out there and hope you have a great time.

Also worth noting, if your more into trail riding, West Yellowstone is great for that. We were there last year and had a ball. Much more low key riding however compared to Togwotee or Cooke City.

I spend about $600 a trip that's fuel forvthevtruck split 3 ways, fuel for the sled, food, hotel split 4 ways, and bar. If renting I believe rentals are around $350-$450 a day correct me if I'm wrong. So if renting you better bring the check book and make sure they offer insurance if they don't I'd recommend getting insurance through your insurance company.
