Have two 03 RX-1M,s with an identical popping, poppity pop sound at slow speeds 15-30mph, light throttle position. Both tuned by dealer of questionable ability. Supposedly carbs were synched, high altitude setup 130 mains. Idles perfect and accelerates fine, plugs nice light brown color
Just this annoying popping sound out exhaust. Dealer cannot duplicate in shop or seem to solve. Any suggestions? Is it possibly running lean at light throttle? I run at 5000ft and above.

Thanks

Have you had any instances where you hit the throttle and it does nothing but pop and backfire? If so you may want to check your spark plug boots. I had a similar problem that caused me a major failure but when I started mine it would backfire and pop but not engage. I would have to start the sled with the throttle pinned to get it to take off then once I let off the throttle it went back into the same old mode. You may also have some bad gas.

Fun,

Where are the needles? Mine did that when I had the needles REALLY lean. My air/fuel gauge confirmed the lean condition.

I PM'd jtssrx. Not to take anything away from our great Canadian partners but I think I got some bunk gas in either Elliot Lake or Spanish.
It left me stranded on the F trail between Elliot Lake and Aubrey Falls on my way to Chapleau. Needless to say it was about -25 degrees and around 10:30 at night. Got to my destination around 5:30 Am and DAMN was I cold  :ORC

Yamabluerx1 - No backfiring problems at all.

Jtssrx - New fuel, dealer has had carbs apart several times, once they put starter jets and main jets in wrong holes. Is this even possible?

Spray - Pilot screws are supposedly out 1 1/4 is this enough?
The needles have not been touched by the dealer I checked and
the C clip is on the third notch with a washer above and below.
Should I try putting both washers below or just drop it down to
the fourth position?

Is the white spacer is under the clip also? It should be (top to bottom) washer, clip, spacer, washer. (if memory serves me correctly) If the spacer is not there that would cause a lean condition.

If the spacer is there then I would agree with Whits-end in checking the pilots.

Spray - Yes the white spacer is under the clips. The shop manual doesn't show this very well, that's for sure.

I think you all might be on to something with the pilot jets. I removed all the spark plugs and 1 & 4 are definitely lighter than 2 & 3. Will try the Seafoam trick, if that doesn't solve the problem will pull the pilots and clean.

Have a great holiday season

RX4fun, I too have the same problem, have had it from delivery from dealer...new DEC. 02,rx1mt,same deal, popping and burble between 4500 and 6000 RPM. I have been to, two different dealers with my problem and no fix,I have done all of the adjustment that you are trying....no help, pilot jets, pilot air, needle adjust, mains,TPS,every thing and any thing that has been posted on this site...BTW this is by far the best site for info and tweaks there is ........bar none, but still I have this problem,I must say... I still love this sled,Ive learned to live with it after all these years. Its never let me down or stranded in the woods. Lets keep this post going, maybe we can find a way to fix it, Oh one more thing.........Freddie the filters ROCK even with the burble and pop I love em......RS in Truckee

Yukon - I think I see your problem, your from CA like me. Dealers out here don't seem to have enough (any) experience with this sled so they are learning on our dime. One dealer even admitted to me that they constantly lurk on this site to try and pick up any info they can.

No more dealer visits for me, the extended warranty has never covered anything anyway so I will just do as I have always done and fix it myself,
with help from some of the experts on this site...spray... LB... convert...etc
etc, you know who you are.

Yukon pm me your e-mail address and I will keep you posted on any solution I find on our problem.

Everyone have a great Christmas
