Recently bought used RX-1 short track with 1.25 lug track. I've heard some horror stories about getting stuck alot, considering the weight and all. This machine should have plenty of power to pull itself through powder if you stay on the throttle ... shouldn't it???

This machine will go through the deep better than any lighter shorty. I have found that there is no limit to the depth of snow that you go through with this sled and 1.25 track. That is not to say that you won't or can't get stuck. Anything can get stuck if you do something dumb.

If you are in really deep snow FIELD and get stuck, ROLL the machine onto its side, stomp the snow down where it was, and roll it back on.

There are some tricks that you will need for riding in the deep. If you keep the throttle PINNED, you won't be able to steer AT ALL. Run the thing in the deep SLOW enough that when you hit the throttle, both skis jump way up off the snow. When you want to steer, pin the throttle, and lean it into the turn. Don't use the skis to steer, they will make the sled go OPPOSITE direction from where you want to go. You can use the skis to steer AWAY from where you want to go to help pull the machine up on its side in the direction you want to go.

If you have any experience riding a UNICYCLE, you won't have any problem with RX1 in the deep.

I did not get stuck once last year with my shorty, and that was with the stock POS track, nor do I want to! Use that throttle and don't be shy, let the ponies pull you out! Just like LB said, learn to steer it with your body in the deep stuff, you will be fine!

There's two kinds of riders. Those that can do the deep powder and those that can't. The crew I ride with has both. Some get stuck in an open powder field on a 151 mountain machine, and another in the group can pick his way through the forest in 5 feet of powder and not get stuck --- on a 96 XLT.
What I'm saying is that rider skill has alot more to do with how well you do in the deep stuff than most people admit to.
(and I ain't saying which of the two types I am) :D

rx1 powder puffing

the best way to steer a heavy sled, or any sled in deep powder for that matter, is to counter steer. If you ever watch the sled videos they do it all the time. If you want to turn hard left, lean left and turn the skis right hard. It may seem funny, but believe me, it works 100%.

To be honest, my 03 with the stock track went through the powder a lot better than I thought it would. I've got a Ripsaw on order, and I think it will be pretty decent with that.

We watched GrapeApe get stuck in Ontario last year. Untold feet of untouched powder...he was riding close to a tree, and it snagged his tether! I know there's pics of the gang of hosers trying to raise the Titanic, er um..I mean RX1 XC...It was darn funny!

Best advice, if it's uphill, and you've got a shorty w/stock track, go the other way. Also, Ibuprofen and Doan's back pills help.

To me.....I hated the powder ability. I thought it nose dived in the fluffy (changed to Precisions now), I thought the original POS track was garbage and didn't trench it through the deep stuff well enough, overall, it was one of my biggest complaints.

I went to a Hartman 136 and 1.25, with the Precisions, I'll see how it does this year in the stuff. My feeling in getting rid of the "nipple" track, it should do much better.

I'm waiting for Yamaha to come out with a WIDE set of skis for front heavy sleds, like the RX1 and SRX. I wish C&A would do the same. If you look at Simmons and SLP Powder Pros, they are quite a bit wider than any of Yamaha skis! The width makes a huge difference off trail.

I don't see the Precisions makeing a huge difference there, they're slightly wider than a stock RX1 ski...got any measurments for us?

skis

I am sure you guys get tired of me saying this, but Larry at Ekholm makes wonderful skis, I ran them in the mountains all last year. He even makes SUPER WIDE Arctic skis, almost a foot wide, if you want floatation. 888-390-5550 Larry

Arctic Cat Skis fit.
Alot of people don't like the parabolics, but the older (2001 and earlier) standard Mountain Cats had great skis and they bolt right into to the RX saddles. (You will have to drill a couple of extra holes in the RX's aluminum saddles).
