Just got my shock back from bruce at pioneer with the 6.5 spring and revalve. I'm 245lbs geared up on a 2007 Attak ER....

Question is what should I have my clip and cam set at??? well I guess I can play with the cam on the trail, but love to know where the clip needs to be before I put the shock back in.

Thanks
Daranello

I am about the same weight as you (well maybe a few pounds more..lol) but I have the 6.5 big boy spring as you do. I did not get my shock revalved though. I have the clip in the 3rd position. I am pretty sure I have read on here before with the 6.5 you will want it in the 3rd position. I usually have the dial on the side set around midway (11 clicks) but will go up to 15 in the rough stuff. I have an Apex so not sure if it will be much different on the Attak.

Really, 3rd being the stiffest or softest.........

I was under the impresion that I was given the 6.5 so I can run on the softest settings?

So sould I run mine in the 2nd clip? Or will that be too stiff???

The third position would be the stiffest.

I am 205 without any gear so maybe 215-220 with gear. I have the stock KYB spring and Pioneer has revalved the shock. My clip is in the second position and the preload adjustment is on the fourth notch and it's prefect for me. I can dial it down for plush cruising or crank it up for serious hammering. My guess would be to put it in the second position and then fine tune it with the preload adjustment.

Also one more thing, before putting the shox back in what should I grease the needdle bearings with, can I just use the synthetic shell greese I use on the suspension nipples???

After further inspection (i went in the garage to take a peak)...now I might have confused myself, if there is one line/groove showing is the shock in the 3rd clip or would it be 1st clip? My preload is set at 7.

Duranello, based on the chart below for your weight with the heavy spring your clip should be set in the first position on cam #7. Kinda makes it difficult because you're right there between positions 1 and 2 based on the chart. I guess it boils down to what type of riding you do most. If you mostly run hard go with the second position. If you mostly cruise go with the first position. If you don’t like it change it until you do because these suspensions work awesome when you get them set up properly.

The clip and cam positions I am running are exactly what is recommended for my weight with the stock spring based on the bottom chart below. Once your shock is valved properly the charts actually become very accurate.

Whatever you end up doing report back and let us know how it works out. I love hearing people’s reactions after having their shock revalved.

Mchimera, based on your picture you are in the second clip position on cam #7. The groove you are seeing is the first position. If you were in the third position you would see two grooves. Without having the shock revalved you are relying much more on the spring and not the shock for compression dampening. This works but not nearly as well as proper valving will. You also change the rebound characteristics with too much spring and not enough shock. Based on the bottom chart below your preload is set for someone in the 300-330lb. range. If your shock were valved properly it would be my guess that you could run your preload much closer to your actual weight with significantly better results.

Mchimera, on closer inspection of your picture it appears that your clip is in the first position. The line you are seeing is a shoulder and not an actual groove. With no grooves showing it's in the first position. This puts you in the correct position for your weight based on the chart. This gives you a lot of room to crank up the preload but as I said before that will change the characteristics of the shock, especially the rebound. Having it revalved will give you the performance while maintaining the plushness. Sorry for the confusion. Hope this helps.

Sorry for the wrong info Daranello (you see you cant believe everything you here on the internet..lol), I guess mine is in the 1st clip, #7 position. Thanks for the input GYTRules and posting those charts. I guess at this point I just need to do the right thing and get the revalve done.

Helps alot GYTRules, thanks again for the info. I am starting to understand it all now. So without the revalve...having the clip in the first position and preload at 7 looks to be its where I should be at considering I weigh the big 250lbs.

Set the spring in the center ( #2 ) position. Set the clicker on the softest setting. This should get you started.

No problem. With the revalve you should be set good. Without the revalve you're probably a little on the soft side. Again, it depends on your riding style.
