On my 660 I drilled 6 one inch holes in the air box lid, went up one size with the pilot, up two sizes on the main jet. I left the needle alone. Mine only pops when the air filter is really dirty. Cold starting was really improved with the pilot jet being bigger. I had a LRD Torque pipe on it when I did the changes. Since then the pipe fell apart and I am using the stock pipe and it still runs great, just not quite as much noise or power.
