My son and I are in the market for a pair of used RX-1's between now and Christmas. I love the idea of moving to a 4-stroke.

I ride basically on flatlands and rarely powder. I live in central IA and if we get 6" of snow on the ground at any one time it's a miracle. However we do "ditch bang" a lot around here and you can be in 3-4 ft of there. I go to WI twice a year and ride the trails.

My son is thinking of an RX Mountain because he'd love to go where there is powder someday (out West?). He's also a speed freak. Currently rides a '95 Vmax 600 that is piped, clutched, etc... and it screams. I don't want him to be disappointed with an RX Mountain due to it's weight. Would he be?

As for me, I'd never ride more than 75. I just enjoy the ride and the scenary but am NOT a speed nut. However I'm looking for a smooth ride and one that won't get stuck easily (I'm too old - and these things are too heavy! lol). So I'm thinking of either a Warrior or Mountain but could be pursuaded to shorties.

Thoughts??

Thanks!
Bob

p.s.
My total budget is going to be $12k - $14k and with that I'm thinking of buying ext Y.E.S. warranties as well (ebay for $500). Your thoughts on the YES? Is it worth it?

If your riding trails and ditches in less that a foot of powder, forget about a mountain sled. If you don't have plans of lots of trips into the mountains, forget about a mountain sled. The tradeoffs you make with a mountain machine can make trail riding miserable. When it's icy they can be downright dangerous, and overheating is a big problem.

What kinds of tradeoffs? I just assumed that a longer track would be a smoother ride on the trails. How does ice effect it? And why is a mountain more prone to overheating?

Pardon my ignorance.

Thanks!
Bob

Too much push in the corners with a Mountain for primarily trail riding. Early mountains didn't have the rear heat exchanger and the cross over pipe didn't get as much snow thrown on it as the RX-1. The warriors also run warmer than RX-1's.

Stick with a Basic RX-1!!

THe warrior and Mountain are too long for the area you live in...

I live in similar area as you.. I work in Dubuque IA.

Your area of riding is considered DITCH BANGING By my standards..

You might want to wait and pick up some VECTORS when some of the guys who bought em start hurting for money.. YOu could get em cheap..

1) Mighty is right about the 'push'. Because of the long length, these sleds just don't change directions as easily as the short ones do. If you've noticed guys on this forum complain about this 'push' on short RX1's..... they had better not test drive an RX Mountain because it's way worse. I've riden all three lengths of RX and don't have a problem (my next one will be a Mountain) but based on these forums, some guys would freak out if they tried a 151".
2) The track on a RX Mountian has 2" paddles, which in any kind of loose snow digs like crazy, but on ice they fold over and slip like a leather shoe on an icey sidewalk..... and it's even worse when the back end slides sideways (this is where they are dangerous)
3) The 2" paddles on the track don't kick up as much and throw as much snow and ice into the front heat exchanger as a 1.25" studded track does when trails are icy. This is why the Mountain machine can get hot.
4) Even if you manage to keep your machines cooling under control on a hardpack trail, you can still burn off a set of plastic sliders in 2 or 3 rides because they just don't get the snow lube that they do with a 1" or 1.25" track.

Do NOT buy a rx1 Mountain! They are a tank, they suck in powder and would be way to heavy to ride around Ia and a few trips north. Plus a 2" paddle is very hard on hyfax when trying to ride trails. I think you should buy a rage or vector and your son a short track rx1. Call Port Yamaha, they got some special buy 05's. ===SRXSRULE===

Sounds like we'll be staying away from the Mountain. Some say the Warrior bust most say a shorty. Can I just put forth a blunt question of...what would be a great deal on an '05 shorty? Likely I'll buy used but you never know...

Also, what's the difference between a "Rage" a "Vector" and an RX-1?

Thanks again
Bob

I highly doubt you find any used 05's yet.
Rage and vector have the lower HP 3 cyclinder 4 stroke and the rage has a Warrior rear skid.

The blunt question I was asking was... what's a great deal on a NEW '05 RX-1 shorty out the door? What have your dealers shot you?

I look on the internet but they all just list MSRP :-(

Do the RAGE and the VECTOR have the same monoshock system as the '05 RX-1s?

Thanks

The rage is basically a Rxwarrior with the new 3 cyl engine..

The vector is a 121 track with the new 3 cyl engine..

NEITHER of these sleds have the monoshock.. Its only on the 05 rx-1

The rage does have clicker rear shock.. the vector uses arctic and polaris type torsion springs..
