Hi guys
Was riding my RX1-M this weekend doin about 60-70 down a long straight on the trail when my headlight went dim (like limp mode) then the engine died and would not re-start. I smelled a plastic or something burning when it died.
Any ideas what this could be?

What year is your RX-1?

It is 2003 and has 2000 miles on it.
The 03 had an electrical problem where the wires would get pinched in the steering column. If you go to the electrical section you might find some info. I think it was a brown wire?? under the steering pad. Check there first. Even though mine is an 03 I have not had any electrical problems and have not checked under the pad. See if this helps.

You can have a look at the Main fuse too. Located near the battery. under the rubber protector.

the machine wouldnt turn over at all after it died. Could this be due to the fuse/wiring?
It was a distintive smell coming from the machine.
Anybody heard of this smell?

Sounds to me like a stator gone bad. Usually, if you main fuse goes out it will just quit and not start. However, if your stator goes, the battery is no longer getting charged so it will continue to run with the battery providing the juice for the spark. Thus, the dim headlights. Once the battery goes dead, it will just be finished. You should be able to hook another battery up to jump it and see if it will turn over. If it does, it is not the main fuse and might be the stator. Of course, it might be something totally different
Good luck.

Good luck.

you might want to check the wires from the rectifier that is located in the nose cone. the wires tend to rub on the frame and in turn blows out the 30 amp fuse near the battery. has happened to me twice. I put some connectors on the broken leads then put wire loom over that. Still the frame is sharp and needs some vinyl trim over the edges.
