If it helps you any, I just replaced my steering post and plastic bushings and mine has it too. Don't think it's any big deal! Is frusterating though. I like a nice tight feel to the post for when you are pulling on it hard. Just seems to flex to much!

the slop is 2-3 mm! since the sled is brand new the bushings cant be shot.anyone else notice this on their sleds? thanks
My 06 is the same. Some forward and backward slop is normal

Yes it is unnerveing but thats the way it is.You would think Yamaha would have better tolerances for the steering slop, still hard to get used to and this will be third season on my RX,repaced the bushings last year and it didnt help

I wouldn't worry about it, just the nature of the beast. Every new snowmachine I ever bought came with some slop in the steering and proceeded to get worse over time.
For the price of a sled it is unacceptable, but I guess it is hard for them to tune it out because the forces involved with turning 3' long skis are far greater than the forces effecting an ATV front end (which stays tight for years).

There not all this way. My 06 was tight, zero play when I got it. After about 500 miles of hard boondocking it started to loosen up. On the steering coulm bushings you can fix this by taking out the steel sleeves that the bushing hold down bolts go through. Then machine around .030" off the steel sleeves , lube the bushings and put it back together. Then slowly tighten the bolts while turning the bars side to side. when you fell it get start to get harder to turn, stop tighiting the bolts and hold over the lock tabs so the bolts cant move. That fixes the steering shaft, the other problems are loose joints and after replacing them try and lube them before each trip or every few rides. Eric

I had some play in mine as well, I took off the plastic bocks that hold it, ground down the sufaces on both pieces where they meet and put a washer over each stud (There is a shoulder on the bolts so you can't tighten it up any more then they already are) put it back together and she's snug as a bug. By the way, my sled is an 05' RX-1 Turbo so I guess it was getting sloppy from me hanging on so tight and yanking the $hit out of it.
