Kind of looks like weight savings to me. Pretty basic ski which looks like it will follow ruts pretty easy. The thing I like about the dual runner set-up is theoretically when the ski keel falls into a rut the outer carbide will bite and allow you to glide through it..
 
I used pilot 5.7 on my apex last year and it worked fine. The stock skis suck.
 
With all the hype about how much lighter the new XP is, i'm sure that the outter runner was dropped to save weight. I would go with the dual runner pilots , they work very well.
 
Had the darting problem with my new last year o6 apex last year and was talking to a yammy dealer at the snowmobile show this fall. He said Woodys dullies would work. So I bought a set 6inch and they arent cheap, but cheaper than skis and worked great and no more issues.
 
How do the dual runner pilots work in the deeper snow compared to the stock skis. Also what size runners do you guys use that have the skis.
 
I feel the pilots cut the turning effort in half compared to stock skis..

i would think getting rid of the outer carbide with increase darting..

I wouldnt change the old pilots..
 
My Doo friends hate the "new" pilot skis with the single runner. Stick with the original dual runner design - they are great skis.

I have the "new" pilot 6.9 skis. Mine came with single carbide mounting, but all I did was drill out where the outside carbide mounts. The mounting boss is there for the outside, just not drilled out. (ski-doo saving weight) Took all of 10 sec. I don't know about the "new" 5.7 pilots but I would look to see if they could be drilled out too. I love the handling of these skis and feel a lot safer with no to min darting. If you ask me the 6.9 pilots are just as good as the 5.7's on groomed trails, and you get the add benifit of being able to go off trail and keep the front of sled from plowing.

Where is the groove for the outside carbide? My Pilots have a groove on the bottom for the outside carbide and don't look anything like the ones in your pic.
