Tunnel protectors?

I'm about to stud the track on my Phazer. All of my Ski-poo buddies say I need tunnel protectors. Well What is a tunnel protector and where do I get them and do I really need them? I have closed the back hole of the tunnel and have the factory louvers on it.

You can get them @ your dealer, They stop the studs from hitting the tunnel. I have both on mine. You can also use some Hifax and just bolt it in the tunnel. Yamaha part # SMA 8GC21-00-00
